With the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the need for large numbers of USAF forces in the UK no longer existed and plans were made for significant cuts.

 

Bases at Bentwaters, Chicksands, Greenham Common, Sculthorpe and Upper Heyford were closed by the end of 1993. Alconbury's flightline was closed, and its base support functions were taken over by RAF Molesworth. Consolidations were made both at Lakenheath and Mildenhall, leaving them the only two fully equipped USAFE bases in the UK.

LOL, I didn't know off hand the number but I knew there was a few, driven past them in the past. The yanks have a few intelligence and communications bases out here amongst other things.[/

 

I was sure there was big one in thetford

Was done there few years ago and they were there

 

Yes lakenheath,,near thetford ,,,USAF base 48th tactical fighter wing,,,it's still there

Arrochars just before the rest and be thankfull they use to test torpedos on it years ago think its loch long its on

Caught loads of mackerel on loch Long. It's one long, narrow f*****g deep loch. I can mind you had to see what flag was on the bouy to see if any subs were there. Think it was an American base. Loch Fyne is another cracking loch and good fishing. Had a nice sea trout from there using mackerel as bait.
loch fyne cracking water for sea trout i have a few good spots for the sea trout for the fly some cracking we bays best fish in the sea

Do you take the cut of for Dunoon? Some good fishing along there
