tomburras 2,730
Hi all my brother and I are off for a few days camping and having trips to the river u r e fly fishing in early June. Iv not done much fly fishing on rivers, does anyone have any pointers on what sort of fly to use at that time of year and what's the best way to present it. My general idea is to use a dry fly such as a mayfly on 3lbs line - does this sound OK? Many thanks Tom. Had to edit to river u r e as when typed together it comes up as banned text?! J Darcy 5,871
Don't waste your time with mayfly.......it's not going to happen IMO.....if you're using dry fly then try a black knat or a greenwells, nice universal flies... however, if you're relatively new to fly fishing maybe a wet fly team would be better......#If i had to pick three flies for a cast it would be the greenwells glory, the black and peacock spider and a goldhead march brown........good luck. 3 Quote Link to post
neil r 1,861
F - flys did well for me last season on the rivers . klinkhammers are also worth using . I don't use wets or nymphs if I can help it but the spider patterns and hares ears caught me fish when I had to use them 1 Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
Good advice above, dont forget the pheasant tail nymph also, and for the top grey duster, greenwells glory, and klinkhammers all work well, if you can get your hands on mini Montana's they can be good too. 2 Quote Link to post

Thank you j Darcy I'll order the fly's you mention. Last year I went to Wales and fished the river seiont with dry flies, there was trout rising all over it and I still managed to blank lol. I was using mayfly, grey duster and black knat, my presentation must have not been right. Is 3lbs line OK? I was on 5.5lbs last time so maybe this put them off. I'll get a pair of waders before I go this time as it was hard having the fast shallows near me and presenting my fly to where they where rising without the line near me been pulled by the flow. Can you fish a dry fly with a wet fly dropper? Many thanks for your help. Quote Link to post

Cheers guys I'll order some of these too as a back up. Would you reccomend wet fly's for a river learner? I'm dying to catch on a dry but if I have to try a more productive method I will. Don't want to blank this time lol. Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
Tom, do not waste your time with mayfly, unless the trout are flat out obsessed with them that is. If truth be know mayfly's catch more anglers than they do fish... 1 Quote Link to post

charlie caller 3,654
Dont forget to de-grease your leader when you are fishing dries, Orvis mud is my favourite, it takes all the glint off the nylon and sinks it below the surface, rather than a dry/wet combination, try the New Zealand style, dry/nymph, a dry on the point, then tie 6-8 inches of tippet to the bend in the hook with the same knot you tie your fly on with then tie something not too heavy (hares ear would be good) on the end, you then have a dry on top with a nymph suspended below 1 Quote Link to post

tomburras 2,730
Well I couldn't wait for the river fly fishing holiday so I went into the garage and dusted off the fly tackle, there was a few fly's with it so I headed to a spot iv not been to in years. When we where kids we played in these woods are rode our bikes and that was the last time I went but I thaught i remembered seeing trout rise in the beck that went through the woods but could not be sure. Actually I wasn't sure if there was anything in it at all lol. Here is some pics of the beck: It is very small with the odd knee deep pool, when I started tackling up I began to doubt my sanity and the looks from dog walkers where also off putting as they looked at me like I was mad lol. Casting here was very difficult as its quite overgrown and my rod is 9 foot 6. I thought in the corner of my eye I saw a rise so I had a cast for it and success!.... I was over the moon with this and after a walk and another 3 hours or so I caught 5 all this sort of size The beck looked fishless and when they take god knows where they came from but they where spitting them out as fast as they took them. In the end it worked out best to cast upstream to keep the line tight so I could strike fast enough. The fly I was using was a good head black and peacock witch ended up looking like this after the fish and missed takes... And they still took it! It was the best outing in ages and took me back so it really felt like a small boys adventure! My knees are red raw from the nettle stings and I'm knackered as I'm on nights this week but it was worth the treck out and I'll have a smile on my face on tonights night shift!. Its not quite a river but it was great to in peace and by flowing water and I saw a frog, kingfisher and a water vole. All the trout where unhooked in the landing net head with wet hands and in the water (apart for the one in the PIC) and released. Cheers, tom. Edited April 28, 2014 by tomburras 6 Quote Link to post

charlie caller 3,654
Well done mate, I enjoyed that, always great to get that small boy feeling back now and again, I guess the older we get the less it comes, that should have given your confidence a boost for the forthcoming holiday, I wish you tight lines, and some trout on the campfire,(if you find some wild garlick dig the bulbs up and crush a few, mix with some soft butter, and put inside your trout before cooking yum yum superb) 1 Quote Link to post
