Cedric 132
Picked up the 10/22 yesterday, fitted a scope and headed off to try it with a variety of ammo. Imagine my disappointment when it grouped like a shotgun ! At first it was shooting so low I ran out of vertical adjustment on the scope so I headed home and started shimming the rear mount. Next morning it was no different so tried another scope – just the same ! Then I noticed some of the holes were a bit ragged so I took off the moderator and promptly produced a 1 ¼” group – even with the factory trigger. So – was it the moderator or the threading out of line? Headed home again for another moderator (same make – SAK). That produced virtually the same result – over a foot low and ragged. Called in at my RFD and after a good inspection he noticed that the front sight was protruding over the end of the barrel (over the threaded section) by a tiny amount, miniscule! The result of this was the moderator catching on it and being forced/tipped downwards as it was tightened, like a wedge. We drifted the sight out of it’s dovetail and this has left a totally flush edge for the mod. to sit against – so, off out in the morning to try again, hopefully sorted. Then I can start work on the trigger, at the moment you could safely lay two bags of sugar on it before it went off ! Quote Link to post
Elliott 436
Glad you got it sorted! That's a great group for a semi auto. What was the range, 50 yards? Quote Link to post
Cedric 132
Tried again this morning and the rifle worked perfectly, just shows what taking a hammer to your front sight can do ! I must say I'm most impressed with the accuracy of the 10/22 out of the box (despite the farting about with the moderator). I have only tried it at 25 yards so far, to make sure I was actually getting on the paper. I've worked out how to use the factory trigger, you squeeze it to about 7 pounds - then you're left with a 2 pound pull ! Popped a Bushnell Banner scope on to try it, it's going to have night vision eventually, rather struggled with the paralax at 25 yards but managed to achieve the results in the pic. Now I can take it to bits and work on the trigger, hopefully to achieve even better groups - rabbit head sized at 50 yards is the objective. Quote Link to post

I looked at the semi autos before getting my 452. Out of curiosity where abouts in Lancashire are you, anywhere near me? Quote Link to post

Cedric 132
Spent most of last night fiddling with the trigger and managed to reduce the 9lb creepy factory pull to about 4 lbs, pretty crisp! Polished everything in sight and gave it a coat of Teflon lube. Modified the bolt release at the same time. I suppose I can improve the trigger even more but was going on the cautious side, might tackle it again in a while. Just been out to try it at 50 yards, it's much easier to shoot now. Seems to really like the Lapula with the Eley a close second (I think the lateral dispersion is down to me getting tiered. The RWS ammo was quite inconsistent, notable difference in the sound they made and quite a few failed to eject cleanly. Just for fun I popped a couple of CCI High Velocity through it, a bit over 1 1/2" high at 50 yards, not bad. Quote Link to post
Rimfireboy! 1,463
I usually find HV's hit about three inches high (depending on brand) at fifty yards when zeroed with subs. CCI velocitors are probably one of the hardest hitting .22's available. Got to say though, the (Lapua) SK's are a superb subsonic bullet with regards to consistency, accuracy and quality. As with most .22's though, different barrels have different ammo preferences. As for RWS subs, I've found them to be down on power compared to many other subs. Also, Eley subsonic hollow don't seem to be as hard hitting as the old subsonic xtra plus. Eley high velocity hollowpoint used to be my favourite .22 HV's but they, along with subsonic xtra plus seem to have disappeared from Eleys .22 line up, which is a shame. Quote Link to post
Cedric 132
My Anshutz pops the HV a good 2" high and a little to the right ! Fitted the Pitch Black night vision tonight and went out to zero it, bit of a fiddle to start with but easy when you get used to it. Only tried it at 25 yards due to lack of suitable targets and was most surprised. Even with looking at a screen and not shouldering the rifle I got groups not much bigger than with the scope ! So - 50 yards it is tomorrow night. One drawback with the night vision fitted is that it is too bulky to fit in a slip. Does anyone know of deeper gun slips or anyone who makes them to order ? Used Eley ammo and had a few fail to load from the magazine so will have to have a poke at that. Fussy blighters those rotary magazines ! Quote Link to post
Alsone 789
This looks pretty deep (unsure of the width dimensions though): http://www.sportsmanguncentre.co.uk/product/124b23a14dd442b347161855/Bob+Allen+Tactical+Rifle+Slip/ Quote Link to post

I really like my 10/22 cracking little rifle but I do agree about the trigger Please see attached hope this is of use http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/269095-ruger-1022-trigger/?hl=%2B10+%2B22+%2Btrigger Quote Link to post
Cedric 132
Thanks Seeker, the vid links you posted seem to have expired. I found a number of different methods and used the one in this vid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLy3_pxQfqs Quote Link to post
Cedric 132
PS. I discovered that a rotary electic toothbrush dipped in solvent and poked up through the magazine well is great for cleaning the crud off the chamber face and bolt face. When unloading a partially emptied magazine I noticed the remaining rounds felt quite gritty from the crap that falls down into it so I've been giving them a gentle wipe before re using them. A good squirt of electrical contact cleaner seems to clean the mags. fine. Quote Link to post
