RemyBolt 420
Has anyone been on one of these? I'm looking to get a .223 straight off the bat with my FAC, and the firearms officer said I'd have to do a Centrefire Course. Been looking around and can't find anything on them. No prices or locations that actually do them. I live in the south of Somerset close to the Devon border, so anything around this area would be ideal! Thanks in advance everyone. Quote Link to post
let'sshoot 11
Do they mean DSC1 or DSC2? I haven't heard of a Centerfire Course. But I know that if you want deer on your ticket they (the Firearms dept) favour you to have DSC1 / 2 / or both. Could you join a shooting club which has centerfire ranges? Or have a mentor on your ticket - even though a mentor isn't something required by law so they can't force you to have a mentor condition. Are you a member of BASC? Give them a call and see what they say. If you are a member of BASC and have good reason for owning a .223 then they can't refuse unless they prove otherwise - that you have no good reason of possessing .223 ( or whatever else you apply for) Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
Never heard of anyone being asked to complete one as a condition of an FAC being granted. I know that BASC run such courses or at least have run them in the past, Your FEO is being overzealous in making that a condition of grant, get in touch with whichever shooting organisation you use and ask them for advice, if you don't belong to one, then I would suggest you join. The centrefire courses BASC used to run were a few hundred pounds if I remember rightly so membership of a shooting organisation for a year isn't going to break the bank. A course is not required by law and I believe the new Home Office guidelines on Firearms Administration make no mention of them either Quote Link to post
TheRealChuckNorris 42
I'd recommend joining a centre fire club but you usually need to be a member for six months (completing your probationary period) before you can apply for your FAC if this is the main justification so that wouldn't fit with your timeline. If you've got the land and the good reason lined up I'd ask the FEO which specific course he has in mind (which will force him to actually think about it and come up with a reasonable answer than a hypothetical course he'd like you to complete). I totally understand their hesitance to issue a ticket for calibres where there isn't any experience in place but just telling you to go on a course isn't helpful unless they specifically name it. I did my DSC1 recently and the cost of this sounds like it's in the same ballpark as the hypothetical course you could take. If that's the case I'd recommend the DSC1 as it will give you a valuable leg up if you decide to get into deer stalking - two for the price of one so to speak. Quote Link to post
craig2103 9
I've just had my fac through, I've had sic for 3 years but no real rifle expierence I've been granted both 17hmr which is brilliant a real handy piece of kit I love it (just my opinion) and also .243 which I haven't bought yet because I've got a lot of permission for deer. I've gone for the mentor option as I found it cheaper and also I'd like to have someone with me who has .243 experience. I only have to have the mentor with me with the .243 not the 17hmr. Might be worth you enquiring if you can do the same save you trying to find a course local and within a reasonable price range and might also save you time Quote Link to post
