Trip To The Woods

Recommended Posts

I thought I do a write up of my trips to my woodland permissions over the weekend. I have enjoyed what other people have written so thought i would have a go.

Trip one on Friday saw me arriving at the North woods early with a view to getting into a high seat that I had not used alot this year. I fanicied giving a go because the wind direction was favourable and it meant I could be in position quickly after arriving. After very quietly working my way down to the seat and taking up position I sat and waited, but after a short while something was nagging at me ( not my old lady which is usually what nags at me) so I decided to move. Getting down from this seat quietly and without accident is always an acheivement in itself, as its stands at the top of a step gully, but was managed without incident.

I stalked further into the woods to a clearing in the middle, (the picture of the bluebells) and stood behind a woodpile and waited. After a while and nothing doing I moved further into the woods working along the northern edge keeping the wind in my face. After an hour or so of gently working my way through the woods I had my rifle up on the sticks whilst I had a bit of a rest. Whilst waiting I noticed a movement to my right, holding my breath and not dareing to move a buck emerged from a dense growth of bushes and begain to move across in front of me right to left, this was at a distance of about 75yds. I waited till it stopped and dropped it on the spot. Then the work really began, removing it from the woods was a nightnmare which nearly killed me, in the end I had to return to the car, dump my gear and return with a roe sack to hump it out.

Trip two

Last night saw me visitng my second wood, the south woods. I had moved a high seat the previous week as I had seen a buck in an area of low copise woodland, I knew it would be hard to get at because of where it was so moved the seat and gave the area a day or two before I had a go. I made my way to the seat and got into position and waited. first to show was Charlie, but I resisted as my plan had been to have ago fro the buck. after two hours and nothing showing I was starting to get a bit numb but then I noticed the branches and leaves of a small tree shaking. Using my bins I spied the buck but it was well hidden and a 100yds from the seat. I followed its movement and eventually I was in a position to take a shot, it was now or never it had its back to me and lifted its head, its off I thought, my shot rang out and the buck droped. Thankfully it was still light and because it had not run I was able to find it without to much trouble. The bullet had entered the top of the back of the neck and exicted just under the chin.

Very nice. I managed to get out for a couple of hours at the weekend and tried out my new toy, a fold up high seat. I blanked but enjoyed watching a young roe doe pottering about below me till she finally got my scent and bounced off barking!

I was quite impressed with the seat, an ebay special for the princely sum of £83!
