hairs tend to be a good sign but it is pot luck really the ones you least expect will have a rabbit in which will catch you out because you made a half hearted effort of netting up because you didn't think any thing was at home :whistling:

Think I'm going to have to go up at night and have a look. I'm certain there been used as there's pal antsy of shit and hair leading down the holes. Also another thing. On lookin in the holes there's twigs what to me look like have been trampled on if you get me. What go a little into the hole is that another sign surely it's got to be thanks guys

Only way you'll know for sure is if you see the rabbits going into the burrows, droppings hair and even fresh foot prints doesn't mean their occupying that warran. The land I ferret I just sit and watch from a distance then literally have to mark my rabbits, walk up on them and watch what holes there using, quite a lot they run a good distance from the holes their sitting and playing at to their actual own warren, I don't have a ferreting dog either and I use to waste many a day netting holes with nothing or very little in them.

40 years of ferreting, and never did it without a marking dog. to me that's what ferreting is about, having a decent dog, years ago I was offered ferreting on land holding a lot of rabbits, it was on a sporting estate, but was told no dogs, I turned it down.

So tjones. What things do you look out for then if you don't take a dog along with you. Let's say you got a new permission and on there was a steep banking full of holes and I meen full. You can See we're the rabbits have been running and that. Just need to see how you would approach it thanks.

The thing about the dog is she will mark a burrow you ferret it get a rabbit and the dogs still marking telling you there's another or more rabbits in there and shes seldom wrong . A few folk where wary about letting her on there land but after seeing all she bothered about was rabbits we got the green light

try covering the holes with small sticks or long dry grass, or spread sand in entrances, atleast if anything home it will push the sticks out of way and leave you a nice set of prints in sand , but still no guarantee , as mentioned previously, they could just be playing there!

Personaly i would purse net what i could and then stratigically place long/gate nets around, this situation is when a good dog is very handy imo.Although i dont have my own rabbit dog yet i do ferret alot with a chap who has 2 and like has been said before the dogs arnt often wrong.
