kvnmcwebn 0
Hi, Been training my bedlington pup to retrieve. Im planning on lamping rabbits with her. Started when she was 8 weeks old and was following a programme for training beagles to retrieve rabbits that i found online. Started off just using a sock for the first couple weeks then with a rabbits tail in the sock. Also i would do it at night with a torch and sometimes just plant the sock beforehand and shine the light on it. She was doing well very well for 3 weeks now shes starting to get lazy sometimes. How can i keep her consitant? I only do this training with her a couple times a day for about 10 minutes cause i dont want her to get bored. any advice appreciated. Quote Link to post
skycat 6,174
How old is the pup now? Its easy to over do the training: one, or at the most, 2 throws of a dummy is enough each time. Try hiding the dummy to make it more interesting for the dog: you'd get fed up doing the same thing over and over again: a dog even more so! Also, when a pup is teething their minds are on other things and their gums hurt. I only train for 5 minutes at a time and a couple of times a week: doesn't sound much, but believe me, they remember! Concentrate on having fun with the pup and getting it out and about. Edited to add: just retread your post: the pup is NOT getting lazy, she's just fed up with doing it! Think of interesting ways and different places to train in: and let her be a pup. All work and no play etc etc Quote Link to post
kvnmcwebn 0
hi skycat, It makes a lot of sense what you said about the teething, i noticed something was really preoccupying her lately. Wow I didnt know that they would remember after only a few throws a week. The pup is going on 13 weeks old. thanks p.s. This dog seems to need to have the craic while im training her. Its different than working with my jrt when he was young - that was more straight forward-he is more eager to please.. Edited October 6, 2007 by kvnmcwebn Quote Link to post
marko 30
dont overdo it they get bored easily just a few times a wk is enough try with a few broken plain biscuits as a treat. Quote Link to post

kvnmcwebn 0
Hi, I got the pup off a hunter in port arlington, Co. Laois. It was a ten hour round trip for me. He had the mother, never saw the father but i understand it was a hard dog. He mentioned GC lines. I got it for lamping the ocassioinal rabbit and protecting the hens. Quote Link to post
