Anybody used these in the breeding of lurchers ? they're intelligent athletic looking animals do you think they could bring anything to the breeding of good lurchers, never heard of the doberman being used as a cross, anyone seen, owned, worked a dog with this breed in them?

I've worked a full Dobermann bitch a few times and still do now and again. She's got her strengths and for a non working bred dog does very well.

But nothing a purpose bred dog couldn't do. And why take that risk with unknown stock when we've got working lurchers doing the job already?

its a risk breeding anything gaz but i think theyd add brains and stamina and bit of bulk to the sighthounds and as youve just said your full pedigree does a bit lol cant see why they havent been used more very versatile dogs in their own way

I meant it would be a risk because you wouldn't be breeding from tested stock. Unless someone has grafted a pure Dobermann for a few seasons?

They have got good feet, good depth of chest, decent head and neck size, some strength, athletic shape and build. And the good ones seem to have immense prey drive as well as plenty of brains.

But I still aren't sure they would add anything we don't already have.

Tell you's a story about a Doberman lol about 10 years ago or so I only had a pup lurcher on, and couldn't be running her, but the rain had been on for days and had stopped, and now the wind was picking up, I couldn't bear another night in, so I phoned a mate to see if he fancied a walk up dales with my in-laws full collie for a few runs and hopefully some fresh ferret food, so half hour later and we had a plan. Leave mine at midnight armed with a lamp a full collie and a Doberman that belonged to my mates sister lol.. by 3 o'clock that morning we had caught a few bunnys each, I think we had about 15 between us. Heading back to car my mate lamps another bunny and slips this Doberman called lass, as soon as he hissed for her to go she turned round grabbed him by arm that was holding lamp and ragged him all over fell lol was like a light show with added screams lol I couldn't help for giggling like a schoolgirl lol so after a bit she lets go and calms down again as tho it never happened lol, so we start our walk back to hawes and I get the lamp off mate for fear of his mutt eating it lol I run another couple bunnys and kaffa the collie caught again, then I was in middle of telling my mate my collie was better than his Doberman lol I slipped kaff on 1 more bunny just as we were getting near to the edge of fell and back to track car was on and that collie stopped looked at bunny hopping away and pretended he never saw it lollol by fook did we laugh, was a good night, and the Doberman was entertaining to say the least lol

Only ever seen one Doberman that was anything else but a big stiff legged gassy shithouse, that one was a German import and was a far cry from anything i've seen here.

I see one every morning on my way to work. As a youngster it was easy to mistake it for a black and tan coursing dog, tail up, free flowing, graceful. Now in about its third year it's back end and movement are stiff as feck and it has a slight roll when walking. This has been the case for almost all of this breed i've seen over the years.

Lets not kid ourselves, they have been around a long time and had a boom in the late 70's, with Zeus & Apollo off Magnum, as well as films such as the Doberman Gang. So why the feck did they not get tried and stick around from back then..??? :hmm:

You're bang on about there being 2 types. The bitch I was talking about is a German import. We had a dog bred in the UK. Completely different animals. The dog was more like a lab with bad hips. No dieting or exercise could get him looking anything like the bitch. He struggled to jump a 3 foot gate. The bitch will jump 5 foot with ease.
