matlee 1
Hi guys , ive been working my mates springer and his black lab lately . I've been contemplating getting myself my own gun dog , as im hunting more and more. Just wondering what do you guys think of golden retrievers? Not a huge fan of a springer (just my opinion)! I know a lot of people around me favour using a lab as a gun dog but I've always fancyed a retriever. Your experience and opionion using these dogs would be much appreciated. Quote Link to post
gnipper 6,467
I've never owned one but there used to be an old guy came on our local shoot with golden retrievers and they did alright but they were working bred and were a lot racier and a darker colour than the majority you see. Lab 10,979
Picked up beside a few....never really seen a good one working but I know folk who have good stock and good workers. Don't get mixed up with the working breed to the big fat lazy show breed. Quote Link to post
jessdale 416
A working bred golden retriever can be a very good dog but will do nothing a Labrador doesn't do. Quote Link to post

Mochastorm 68
There is a very good reason that the majority of dogs you see on a shoot are Labradors, Springers and Cockers. There will always be someone who knows of a good Golden Retriever, but there would be plenty of people who know of many good examples of the above breeds. But, that's just my opinion. Best of luck with whatever you choose. Quote Link to post
