dare 1,103
Is this a job more for someone who really loves birds then? Or do you earn really good money once you've got experience in the job? Sounds like alot of hard graft for crap wages?
STRANGER 948
It is a lot of hard graft for crap wages. Keepering is a job where you have to start at the bottom, and by that I mean rock bottom theres not many that can handle it. The amount of shit jobs I've had to do and seen others do beggars belief (some of my favourites are washing and valeting all the bosses and estate vehicles once a week, cleaning moss off of a mile long stone dyke wall on the bosses driveway lol, strimming rushes on the open hill (a never ending job if ever there was one) days spent up to your armpits in disinfectant cleaning shit, weeks on end on a pressure washer hosing sheds) the list is endless. But one thing it does teach you is a good work ethic, and that is why there are so many failures everyone these days expects to be paid for doing the absolute minimum, well keepering soon weeds these people out. Once you get past this very shit stage you will end up with an underkeepers job, possibly a beatkeeper, where you get much more freedom and much less shit. Some places are better than others, and on a few you are left virtually to your own devices. You become your own boss in the best office in the country Its not for everyone but nothing is, if you find yourself questioning whether the job is really for you before you have stared, it isn't. danw 1,748
stranger, don't mention the b*****d pressure washer it reminds me I've still got all the feeders and drinkers to do some days I miss having they underkeeper Once you establish your self as a keeper the dividends start to come BUT not all shoots pay well or treat the keeper right I've been lucky the people I've worked for have been fair and my progression from underkeeper up the food chain came quickly many years on and a few different shoots later and I'm now happy being single handed away from commercial and on a peach of a shoot with a great boss and a fantastic package that I could never match out of keepering.
gonetoearth 5,144
Always remember, catching up birds for the laying pens. We had posh crates that fitted into the Sankey trailer. Sliding doors on top the pride and joy of the estate, Maintenance man c**t !!!!! Lol. Anyway, we banded there wings to stop them fooking off. I got shown and shown. Now i was only a kid, still at school. Phone goes in the house, bell ringing on the side of the house, no mobiles back then, it keeps ringing and ringing. Up gets the keeper, shouting at who ever Mr Barsteward was, he was getting it! Anyway i carries on, gabby b*****d!! I done the last two crates, "well done lad, well done", all loaded as well. Off we went to the pens only a short drive. Unloads the crates. Dropped the front gate and stood back, as hen after hen flew off with bands coming off. The air was fookin blue. I got some right lol. Was not popular for a bit....!!!
