DeerhoundLurcherMan 997
My deerhound blooded dog ran one to a standstill when he was 12 months or so, the fox must have sussed the dog was not going to "take him" so it squatted down and snarled like a possessed demon. It then got up and hit a hedge hard and got away to live another day. I thought, well that's that! The next one he bumped into he was 18 months, straight lined it for 50 yards, took it from the side at full tilt and broke charlies neck as he rolled it... Never refused one after that... Bosun11 537
Yep, Morton and WM have put up wise words on the subject. The pup I have here now has been flat out to connect with one since about 6 months, he don't get that he's only for rabbits and has a natural thing about 'em, more than any other critter he's encountered. Been a bugger trying to avoid them! Pre 2005, I wonder if he'd stick with the game... Quote Link to post
samba 534
think it depends on the dogs attitude towards its quarry had dogs 11mth do there job and still do it years after but not all dogs are the same the dog will let you know when hes ready Quote Link to post

J Darcy 5,871
It's a funny old job, and obviously now all in the past, BUT, I would always wonder really, what is the rush. Let a pup be a pup, it's got the rest of it's life to be a legend...... :victory: 4 Quote Link to post
blackmaggie 3,376
seen young prospects with very good breeding fail because they seen to much to early but with there breeding should be legends the handler has a choice whether there ready or not and all to often they don't read the signs because there either to excited or they think the breeding will mask there inept at reading there dogs I would rather hold back and fail than charge head on with good breeding and fail Quote Link to post
Macky 227
pre ban if you are running a dog at 9.10 month old november ,december ,january there is a good chance it will stash ,if you start a dog off june, july august where the foxes jaw power is not as strong if the youngster seems to hold back ,put it back on the bunnies and wait a bit longer till the dog has matured sometimes it is hard but it is better than having a stasher just learning from experience any dog can stash no matter what age ,was out with a friend of mine that had a dog that would do them single or doubled up had been out with the dog for 5 years you were guaranteed foxes ever time you went out ,one paticular night we was out in wiltshre and the dog in question was doubled up a fox was called in and 2 dogs were slippped then the dogs went through a hedge and 1 of the dogs obviously lost sight and came back and my mates dog did not ,after a couple of minutes the dog was making 1 hell of a racket ,i said to my mates that dog is hooked up what i mean by that was on barbed wire so they both went to find it and brought back a big dog fox and the dog also and the dog was worse for wear what i am saying a dog can stash at any time young or old the dog in question never took another fox again it was gutting to watch the dog stash Quote Link to post
blackmaggie 3,376
seen that with murphy and molly you might know both of these dogs macky molly entered to early imo murphy took a face full not for the first time in 5 yr but just didn't want it any more strange has he never bothered before single or doubled up may be for some enough is enough Quote Link to post
