Dem Goats Again

Recommended Posts

i had 3 phone calls during the week to go sort out the goats, they were very brazen it seems and wandered into a farm yard and helped themselves to some feed for the calves/cows.then to rub the farmers nose in it they hung around and tried it a second time..........well THATS WHERE I COME IN,

I aroseat the ungodly hour of 5 a.m.......5 a.m. for fuk sake...am I MADDD!!!.left the house at 5.30 and hit the road jack, half way there I looked in the side mirror and saw this, thought it was real nice, looking at it now it wasnt THAT nice in the end, lol.

As I arrived at the farm at 6.45,on the road down I spotted the mob high up on the hill and thought to myself,''NOW THATS HANDY'',cuts out the guess work as to where the best place to look for them was,I pulled up at the house and got the gun out,no dog today as if i had went and got her,the rest of the inmates in the kennels would have barked the house down so I went on my own..So I climbed in under the electric fence and walked the 2 rough fields to the start of the trees and made my way up the rough path, lots of twigs and such so its hard to go as silent as you'd like but i gave it my best shot anyway. After only a few hundred yards I heard the bark of a deer which told me the game was up as far as he was concerned,he had me copped.I stood still and didnt move for at least 3 minutes, straining my eyes to see if I could get a glimpse of the crabit whore,Not a sign of anything could I see and no noise was heard again so I deceided to start walking again. Now 3 minutes doesnt sound a whole lot ,but stand still for 3 minutes, its long enough when you do it,I took 2 steps and right in front of me not 50 yards away exploded a fallow hind with calf in tow.How the hell I couldnt see her I cant understand but jaysus I missed her completely.

I made my way high up to the mid section and then swing round in the direction of where I had seen the mob, maybe 10 in number.I used the ridges to keep me out of sight and walked with trepidation in the general direction as to where I had seen them,I crept up behind every ridge expecting to come on them at any moment but all spots were blank, after 2 more crawls I did spot the white of the gang, sitting down in the morning sun and regurgitating their rough grass eaten during the night,so I slowly crept nearer to the rocky ridge to get a resting place for the gun.these days i get the shakes with excitement  at 51 years old you think id have a bit of self control, but no.still a shaker.

I watched them for about 30 seconds and had to pick which ones I was going to take out,I noticed 2 stuck closely together and came to the conclusion that it was a mother and young one.as awfull as it comes across,i had to shoot and get results as the farmer was rightly pissed off with them,So I took a hold of the gun and put the cross hairs on the front shoulder of the nanny and let her have it good, she fell over and that was that, her kid stood wondering what exactly had just happened and i explained again what that was seconds before, the kid too fell over and I had to stop myself as the beast inside me was screaming''KEEP SHOOTING'' but the sportsman inside me( :icon_eek::whistling: )screamed''STOP YE BOLLIX''......and i obeyed. So 2 down and the rest of the mob were barely running away, unsure as to what the hell was going on.

the next feckin dose was getting them down from the hill, and believe me at 8.15 a.m im not all that active enthusiastic.

I did have some positive thinking moments though,IWAS POSITIVE ID BE WELL FUKIN TIRED BY THE TIME I GOT TO THE FIELDS BELOW,AND I WAS ALSO POSITIVE IT WAS A LONG SHITTIN WAY DOWN,but me being a bit of a mule,I got stuck in and luckily threw the 2 carcases down most of the way.if I got lucky they fell another couple of yards, after an hour I had the 2 planted by the road side and made my way back to the van,the beads of sweat running down from all parts of my now boiling body. :cray:

Got to the van,put away the gear and headed back to collect my prise. It was a new spot i went to this morn,i was on one part of it before but these few goats were new to the slaughter which is why they were unsure to run or just stand there and call me names

heres a few photos from the trip.

AGA i couldnt have it on my conscience to shoot something and not use it.It would be a terrible sin to just dump an animal.......any animal that could be processed and eaten either by dogs or hunter.I

He died in '96, mate. An excellent raconteur and writer, who actually did the things he spoke and wrote about, unlike some of the bookwriters around these days.

excellent post like to try it sometimes, i lived in ireland when i was 16 and we captured a feral goat to put in rearing pens to knock the grass down( not my idea) , these were a little more sociable but still involved a good rugby tackle and about 6 of us to get this stinking billy in the landrover , needless to say it just made a whole in the pen and had away the next day

Those wild goats?

I remba when I was a young lad working as a ghillie up north.

I always wanted to shot them on the hill.

The head keeper point blank refused to go near them.

Says they were fookin stinking and best leave them alone.

Tie a long bit rope with seat belt to go round your shoulders, put it around there necks, and you can drag them off the hill na bother.
