spartan 99 Posted April 19, 2014 Report Share Posted April 19, 2014 Had a visit from fireman today and checked over my greenfinch chicks which were ready for ringing.I've never rung any birds before so fireman done the first one for me and looked so easy as he just slipped it stright on.so like any young lad i thought this is gunna be easy but was so wrong as i was so nervous about hurting the chick i was shaking and fireman just gave me a little hand with getting the ring over the first three toes then i did the rest but can tell you now that was probably one of the most intense situation's I've been in and can't thank fireman enough for his help and hope to ring many more 7 Quote Link to post Share on other sites

fireman 10,932 Posted April 19, 2014 Report Share Posted April 19, 2014 First thing mate is don't for one second think we all weren't the same when we first rang a chick and those little toes you have to tug on do look like your'll snap them off ,but as you saw it's more awkward than anything else and with expiriance it gets so much easier .Just check on the tomorrow to make sure she's left them alone but they had nice full crops on them and that bit of wild food we grabbed today will do all your birds the world of good so keep on picking it and just carry on doing what your doing as you got chicks in the nest,a canary hen sat on eggs so your doin it right mate and i was happy to help . 5 Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Do many on here cover there rings with rubber ie from puncher kit You don't have to but with our laws it's down to us to prove there captive bred,they do not have to prove we caught them so it's ok if you have both legaly rung parents but it gets iffy if you don't as if the knock comes the only way of proving yourself innocent is sending them c*nts round the house you got your unring birds from and that might not make you popular even if it's cool to do so. I don't cover the rings but this year what i am going to try is when my bullies nest i'm going to put some rings on bits of wire around the lip of the nest so the parent birds get used to rings being about the nest,i saw it on a facebook bullie page and the fella does well with this tat tic,if it don't work i'll use bits of cut up plaster to cover them.Rung some of my greenie chicks this week and they were tight to get on and i did think i'd missed them but a bit of spit and taking my time squeezed them on,i hate having to ring them but i couldn't be bothered with all the worry in having unrung or wild caught birds in my flights. 2 Quote Link to post Share on other sites
