A Morning In The Happy Hunting Ground

Recommended Posts

Well after checking the zero at the club last night and getting permission from the Land Owners I thought I'd spend a few hours in the early morn to see what was about apart from me.

Setting the alarm for 05.30 I finally got up and listened for the birds singing only to hear my bird snoring. Well I call it it snoring, it's more like a chainsaw going through corrugated tin :air_kiss: . Still my luck was in and I hadn't woke her up.

Making the usual phone calls to 101 and getting the details put across I headed for the happy hunting ground. First time I've shot it in the morning and suddenly realised mistake number 1.The only way into the field is through the gate at the bottom this meant the sun was in my eyes and I couldn't see squat 8) . The other problem was the rabbits saw me before I saw them. (not exactly conducive to getting shots off to targets).

Battling my way through the boggy section I managed to get in close to the hedgerow and 'camp up' there were a few rabbits in front but 50m away and no dead ground or cover. My luck then took a turn for the better a couple of them started chasing each other and coming towards me. 45m ,40m, 35m and they stopped. BIG MISTAKE. 1 Mil dot holdover and thwack the rabbit's doing the dying ant impression. :gunsmilie: right at the base of it's right ear.

After that it went quiet for what seems an eternity so up and went across into another field and back with no potential shots at the distances I spotted the rabbits at. So back to the sniping point. Still nothing Time for the old mans 1/2 hour. well it felt like that but probably wasn't.

Just as I 'woke up' I saw some movement through the corner of my eye and spotted a kit going into a touch of dead-ground about 20m. I ended up having to stand behind a gorse bush lined the sights up with the cross hairs about 1/4 mildot holdunder and wallop Number 2 in the bag. :toast:

Just then a couple of lads appeared with rifles so with bit of Daring-do I thought I'd go and and see who they were and what they were doing, As it transpired it was the other two lads who have permission (both armed with PCP's, a BSA ultra and a R10) who had managed to bag 4 in one of the other fields. Ironically they had spotted my car and thought it had been dumped :icon_eek:. So after swinging the Tilley lamp and pulling up a couple of sandbags for 1/2 hour we separated back to our originally fields (not before I got information about another permission I could get onto :victory:)
So off back to my point when I saw a good sized rabbit about 5m in from the edge of the boundary at 25m. Crosshairs lined up straight on my POI and thwack, a good solid hit to the head only for it to back flip twice out through the boundary fence and out of my reach in some brambles. Well like Meatloaf said 'two out of three ain't bad' :rocker:
So called it a day and it was getting pretty damn warm in the ghillie suit and my stomach was rumbling worse than a driver asleep on the motorway on the edge of the slow lane.
All in all a productive day so time to dress the kill and get the Maggies bag ready, hmm paprika or Italian herb choices choices choices.

Nice shooting, how do you find the ghillie suit, worth a go? Last week i saw a couple of lads on the neighbouring farm near the boundary to mine so thought, being the friendly sorry of chap i am, i would pop my head over the hedge and say hello, only for the two of them to take off like mo farrah! Must not be the talkative types,

Thanks everyone.

It surprised the lads when i got to my feet as they weren't expecting me to be around, so if they couldn't see me (them being hunters an all) then Joe Public isn't likely to see me either especially since the field I was in is close to a public footpath so I thought subtlety was the order of the day :whistling: . The added the advantage is my outline is broken up so I can get closer without too much spooking. Wouldn't bother with it at night and in thick woodland. I bet they were either surprised and run cos the shock or they weren't supposed to be there
