I Only Wanted Some Milk.......................

Recommended Posts

Went off to my local tip a little earlier, with a pile of scrap timber I've been meaning to get rid of for a week or two.

The current Mrs. Blackbriar said to me "We're nearly out of milk. Can you pick some up on the way back?". I duly dropped the rubbish off and proceeded to my local Tesco, as requested, where the scene of chaos and carnage that greeted me beggared belief !

A long line of cars, all queueing for few precious square feet of tarmac was just the beginning of my ordeal, and should have served as a salutary warning of what awaited.

inside, harassed mothers drag crying children behind them, bewildered husbands wander aimlessly around, glancing at hastily written lists. Elderly people look terrified of being killed in the stampede. All civility is forgotten as people jostle and push to make their way around the shop. Staple goods - milk, bread, sugar - normally plentiful, are now in very short supply, as the shelves seem to visibly empty. And everyone - everyone - is struggling to push trollies groaning under the weight of their purchases. Several couples actually had two trollies, both overflowing. The queues to pay for all this wanton consumerism stretch almost as far as you can see.

The staff are no less harassed, frantically shouting orders and requests into their little headsets, as they desperately try to maintain some kind of order.

And the reason for this? Impending natural disaster? Threat of war?

NO ! The very personable young lady on the till informed me it was "because we're closed on Sunday"...............................

Is it me, or has the whole world gone completely mad ?
