Gaz_1989 9,539
Who ever over works a dog to exhaustion and near death is better off away from dogs, It's easily done though isn't it? The dog can look and seem fine after a few tough runs. Then that big one gets up and puts the dog through it's paces and some dogs will run until they collapse. If the dog pulled up just before collapsing would that be ok? Self preservation? Or throwing the towel in? Each to their own. 1 Quote Link to post
Sirius 1,391
I find the phrase is synonomous with ego and testosterone. However I do feel we all need to give our dogs a good workout in various tasks within their capabilities to find out what they are about. 4 Quote Link to post
paulus 26
might just be me but i enjoy watching a good dog work but going out of my way to get it to kill itself would never cross my mind, know and understand the limits of your mutts and you both will be as happy as pigs in shit Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
Well, I've got no time for jackers.....but, how do you know if the dog's a jacker or not unless you give it as much work as possible? I personally expect a dog to be as keen as what I am. No excuses. It all depends on the owners perspective I guess...... And, really, what does it all matter anyway? 1 Quote Link to post

I've given my bitch some big nights work and she did almost collapse one night. I saw the signs and stopped. Probably one run too late if I'm honest, but that's learning for you. She has never jacked for me. But that doesn't mean another man couldn't get her to throw the towel in. But it doesn't really matter, because she isn't in his kennels. She's in mine. Sirius 1,391
No one wants a jacker, cocker, quitter etc I think is pretty obvious isn't it? Just worries me when younger inexperienced owners get all ego'ed up and expect this that and the other from a dog as they read it in a book or on a Internet forum! Give them as much as you can that for sure, just make sure the dogs up to it. 2 Quote Link to post
DEERMAN 1,020
I think once your dogs doing what you want it to do ,your testing yourself as much as the dog knowing how far to push it Would you have a 1/4 bull 3/4 greyhound and expect it to do the same as a 1/2 ?.....then get disappointed when it jacks ? Themoocher 231
I think testing a dog means a lot of different things depending on what you hunt pre ban. If you hunted fox and dog spat them out, then it's bout much use as tits on fish. If you are into coursing and dog pulls up cause it knows it's not going catch then it's bit waste kennel space. If you hunt Bunny's and dog jacks I think you need have a look in the mirror and gave you and the dog a shake. Jmo 3 Quote Link to post

iceman001979 1,316
A good dog man will know his dogs limits.Any dog pushed to much will jack.IMO a dog should be going home with some left in the tank. 5 Quote Link to post

Phil Lloyd 10,738
...Its a sad day/night,.when a running dog,.. decides to quit running . These things happen, they always have ,..and they always will... The facts are,..some dog lads ain't realy quite as into their dogs, as others are. They miss wee signs, that to other men, shout out a warning,..loud and clear as to just what is fast looming upon the horizon This throwing in the towel business, can occur with all lurcher related disciplines.. Possibly it is most obvious in strong dogs that are still sore from their efforts, or with hard run coursing dogs, that have quite plainly, had enough.. I've also seen dogs quit when out lamping, on large quantities of rabbits.. It happens, and once it does,.the quit factor is always there, and no amount of resting seems to give you back the runner,.. you once had. I feel sorry for lads who place their life's happiness and entire reason for being, upon the vagaries of a mere canine,...but, I have been there myself, so I do understand it.. Facts are, everyone and everything can be made to jack,.. I just thank the Lord, that nowadays, life is so much easier and enjoyable,..the pressure is off.
