beam 130
I'm looking to do a bit of night fishing for sea trout this year on the fly. I'm looking to get myself a new outfit for the job but not to sure where to start? I was thinking along the lines of a 10ft 8# rod with an intermediate line with a sinking tip. Any advice appreciated? Tight lines. Edited April 17, 2014 by beam Quote Link to post
MIK 4,763
I work a sharps gordons 2 11' 3" with a greys gx700 reel for my low water salmon /sea trout out fit ...a very good rod ...dont worry about just one line as you will need a few lines depending on conditions ....for the bigger sea trout it seems that slow and on the bottom works well but ive had some great fun with grilse and sea trout skimming a big mudler type across the top in the summer evening s 1 Quote Link to post
beam 130
Cheers for the input Mik, I'm heading upto my local angling center through the week so I'll have a look and see what's about. I usually fish the worm for salmon on my local water, But looking for a bit of a change. Apart from stockie bashing fishing the fly on large rivers is all new to me Cheers, Edited April 18, 2014 by beam Quote Link to post
MIK 4,763
imo there is no other fish pound for pound in uk waters that fights like a sea trout and also the best eating .... 1 Quote Link to post
beam 130
I agree, Before my first springer my best to date was a 9lb 4oz sea trout took on a black flying c and what a fight. I can imagine the stick they must give you on the fly! Quote Link to post
Tiercel 6,986
imo there is no other fish pound for pound in uk waters that fights like a sea trout and also the best eating .... I agree they are the best eating fish of the lot, far better than salmon, as for fighting though I would say a grey mullet Lb for Lb would take some beating. There used to be a power station local that drew in cooling water from the estuary, it would also draw in whitebait at the same time. When the water was expelled back into the estuary the whitebait would come out cooked and the mullet would feed on these. We used to fish for them with bits of silver foil tied to hooks and by Christ would they go when you hooked them on a fly rod. TC 3 Quote Link to post
lifelong cumbrian 1,826
A rod around 10ft-10 1/2ft #7 or #8 should do everything for sea trout, would be capable of casting a tube or tandem lure on a sinking line, sometimes you have to get down deep. That length of rod would also mend line well and should have a bit of give in it for light tippets, I would not go for a fast action rod for sea trout, just my personal opinion though. Good fishing mate. 1 Quote Link to post
beam 130
Cheers for the input lads, I've had many a good sessions down the estuary with light tackle fishing for mullet. I've had a look at a few rods online and come across the greys XF2 10ft 8#? And my choice of reel would be the greys GX700? Cheers, Quote Link to post

The collie dog is predominantly a salmon fly but it's a great fly for sea trout around my area. 1 Quote Link to post
