BGD 6,436
An axle sunk into the ground with an O ring over it that's loose enough to spin freely but not big enough to slip over the axle head (much like the pic already posted actually) is what I use for my chainspots. Not forgetting the swivel on each end of the chain to stop it getting twisted up.
Rabbithunter 456
If you want a 5 meter chain above ground. Then buy a 6meter chain. Dig a 1meter hole. Bury 1 meter of chain and fill in with concrete... just a thought. Unsure if it would work... or if the chain would 'kink' where it leaves the ground.
beast 1,884
http://dogs-dogs-dogs.tumblr.com/tethering i've never tethered a dog for any period of time so i may be talking nonsense but i have staked out many horses and we used axles driven in with a sledgehammer as the anchor point. we used to use bicycle tyres as a shock absorber at the base in case the beast bolted, so as not to hurt itself when it reached the end of the chain. this website seems to make sense, although i would perhaps lose the lap link in favour of a "c"-shackle. i dont really trust those lead clips either, so would probably trade that for a shackle too.

South hams hunter 8,935
Look at the things used to chain bikes on a drive or to a wall ( heavy duty eye), bolt it to the floor and then attach said chain ensuring there's a swivel at both ends
unlacedgecko 1,466
From reading American websites it appears that most use car axels sunk into the ground.
fox digger 1,086
Get a piece of 12 mill or 14mill solid round bar, about 3 feet long, bend it in the middle to make a horse shoe type shape, or a u shape with around 4 or 5 inches between the legs or the u shape. Set the bent bar in concrete and leave an inch or so sticking up above the concrete. It will literally be a bar comming up out of the ground and then turning back down into the ground. Exactly like a giant staple or u nail set in concrete. Use a split link, or if you have a swivel with 20 mill or bigger holes in it put it on the bar bar before you set it in the concrete and bobs your uncle, nothing to snag the chain in. No welding needed. Swivel at dog end and swivel at anchor end is pretty sure not to ravel the chain. Or cut your burried scaffold pole flush with the concrete, get another piece of bar and weld a ring or eye to the top of it and slip it down into you burried scaffold pole, make it so it goes into the scaffold pole a foot or so and it will turn in the burried scaffold pipe as the dog goes in circles. The dog will never pull the bar out of the pipe because he would need to pull it straight up to get it out of the ground and that wont happen unless you keep very intelligent dogs!!
