Space limitations dictate that this chain must run from the centre of open ground. Dog, chained to a wall will traverse a semi circle in front of that wall. Sink a scaffold bar, vertically, and drop a steel ring over it, with the chain attached to the ring? Dog runs round in circles. And, before ye can say " Bad Idea! ", that Dog is, at best, stood listening, very closely, to that scaffold pole. F**king chain catches and wraps round the bottom of the pole. See? So; I'm thinking an eye. Something too low and small for any amount of chain to wrap around. Just wondering; Can That be improved on, please? How about an eye that somehow swivels round as the Dog trundles? It'd be set in a large, buried, lump of concrete, so any moving parts could only be lubricated (and rain soaked!) from ground level. Mate can weld. He'd be making it. Take an eye nut & drill though the thread making the bore smooth ...pop it over the all thread & screw a small nut on top, it would sit nicely in the bottom eye of the eye-nut whilst allowing the eye itself to swivel. Hatched all sorts of plans to allow a Dog a great dashing up and down run. Trouble is, it tends to wind up needing telegraph pole thick structures sunk deep into the earth, to support said High Wire and bare the Dog hitting the end of it. Truth is; I've had Lots of Dogs on chains, for years now. Ironed out the little niggles. It's just that I'm out of anchoring points / space and will need to fix into open space, rather than a wall. I know some of the US guys chain their Dogs on a circle of concrete. Chain fixed in the centre. Gives the Dog maximum room. Simplicity itself ~ on the face of it. mhopton 807 Posted April 14, 2014 Report Share Posted April 14, 2014 With my type of work we use lots of different types of lifting gear , one is called a pinky you can get them to fix to ether m16 or m20 threaded bar , these are very small and move freely in every way I will post a photo up in morning when I get to site mate I think this is what type of gear you need tbo ATB mark ps if it is pm me I will get one sent at weekend Quote Link to post Share on other sites
leegreen 2,182 Posted April 14, 2014 Report Share Posted April 14, 2014 You will have to weld or fix a largish plate/disc to the top of your short pole and set your chain ring below it. You'd have to tinker with the size of the plate/disc, so that the chain won't catch it. Maybe a heavy chamfer on the bottom edge to stop it catching or a downward facing dome shaped plate/disc? Thing is, all this talk of " Tack Welding ", " M 16 " (Machine guns?! ) and " Pinky's " is getting lost on me. Mark; I'll look forward to seeing what ye have in mind, mate. I happen to have the exact length of chain here. Brand new. Bought for a project that never came out. I'll be buying the various swivels and split links I need, when I go to town.
