Hot Meat 3,109
Not a spinner as such but try the Abu Garcia pot bellied tormentor, I've tried it in few different colours in different conditions and always had success, even when spinning for rainbows I tried one when getting pestered by wee uns and Bob's your aunties buddies name, bagged up on much bigger fish lol if I'm honest I prefer plugs to spinners but have had lots of catches on spinners as well so they do work lol Quote Link to post
skunkhead 20
lol personally i like tin foil any old pie tray will do wrap around a couple of swan shot or whatever size yer need then away yer go always mounted on a lrge single hook rather than a treble works for pike, chubb, perch and trout i seen a french feller use this on the ebro near caspe for zander he done ok with this method when fishing for chub, perch and trout yer can even have a worm hanging off the back ! homemade huck fin style always works a treat Quote Link to post

lifelong cumbrian 1,826
I done best with a few pike copy jerk baits I made, nothing fancy but the pike like them. These are a couple of the lures I make, I use different types of wood to get different float/sink rates. the bigger one in the pic is made from oak, it floats with the body suspended, you get some brilliant hits with it. seen pike launch at it miss it then back in the water and nail it. Had a few up to 16lb on it with a 7ft diawa whisker spinning rod. 5 Quote Link to post
Hot Meat 3,109
You ever tried one with a rattle in body lifelong Cambrian? I was given a few real similar, home made by a family member who had passed away, I had 4 among assorted tackle and 2 had a little rattle inside body, I caught more on them than others even tho they all caught. If lost them all now as it was years ago, always said is make some hut never got round to it. I will tho as shop bought big lures cost a bomb these days lol Quote Link to post
lifelong cumbrian 1,826
Yes tried to put a rattle in, drilled a hole in and araldited a little plastic tube in with small ball bearings in. Caught fish but to be honest the rattle was not to good. Also made some with vanes in to jerk them down, used Perspex sheet for that. Personally I have more faith in these than a shop bought version. Hot Meat 3,109
What wood did you use to start them mate, I mean was it dried out or what was done to it before you shaped them and put hooks In, might give one a go Quote Link to post

lifelong cumbrian 1,826
What wood did you use to start them mate, I mean was it dried out or what was done to it before you shaped them and put hooks In, might give one a go Just different types of scrap wood off cuts mate. I get small bits off a joiner I know. I would usually cut the wood to the correct length of the lure and for that big one about 1" wide by 1 1/4" deep. I then draw the rough shape on with a black marker. I then rough it out with the grinder and a flap disc. Then I use a round sanding disc in my drill to shape the head etc. Then rub up with sandpaper. I then drill holes for the hook hangers which you can buy. I then fix in hook hangers and front hanger. they are threaded to screw in. On that big one I did not have any hangers at the time so I drilled holes in and araldited some swivels in, they have never come out. You can see on that one I wrapped lead around the hooks to balance the lure but now I drill a hole in, fill with enough lead to balance the lure the fill rest of hole with food filler. I balance them in the sink in my kitchen with the hooks attached. Then dry, rub down again , clean with white spirit, prime and paint. Then paint with yacht varnish. I use a bit of .8 mm stainless welding wire for a trace as it does not catch the lure when jigging it. You want the grain of the wood to go the length of the lure not the other way. I have made them from 3" to 14" but you need to use a stronger rod for the big ones. Had jacks on the big lure not much bigger than the lure. Need to be making a few more as I have lost a few. With the floaters if you get snapped off they will usually float back to the bank if there is a good breeze. 3 Quote Link to post
