DanRaistrick 53
Tyla- she has never been beaten by anyone to my knowledge and ive had her from 7 weeks old. And as for putting the effort in, ive spent the last year trying allsorts. Ive had her to training classes, spoke to dog behaviour experts and spent at least an hour each night trying to work on her obedience. She just will not listen to me, she is far from scared of me just a very defiant dog. Quote Link to post
Tyla 3,179
Fair enough mate, I edited my post after writing it as you can see. Sounds like an awkward one, if it's defiance rather than fear maybe an e collar? Quote Link to post
mushroom 12,883
Read up on breaking gundogs it basically refers to breaking them to their basic behaviour and rewiring it. It doesn't always work and the techniques vary but usually they have one thing in common is they are quite strong and I truely have no idea how a 3 year old saluki will take it Quote Link to post

DanRaistrick 53
Tyla - Ive tried an E Collar, she just runs out of range after the first zap and then its even more of a challenge to get her back. Mushroom - Ive tried taking her right back to the basics, but she just gets bored and ignores me. In all honesty I just think she loves nothing more than running around off the lead, and nothing I do can get her attention for long enough. I have tried treat orientated training, ive tried praise orientated and game orientated.. just she doesn't seem interested. All she wants to do is hunt up and chase anything that runs. Honestly, I have tried everything I can for over a year and see no improvement what so ever. It's very frustrating and I know many people will just think that its my fault for giving up on her now, but after this long with so much effort and frustration its got to the point where im not prepared to keep going. I just hope I can find someone who will be able to give her the right home because having her PTS is the very last option. Quote Link to post
DeerhoundLurcherMan 997
If there is something to hunt, like a rabbit, squirrel or a jack russel, then hunting comes first, recall comes second. That's the way with my 12 month old saluki lurcher...I knew it was going to be like that before I got him...No point shouting and screaming at him, its just the way he's wired. He wont piss off out of sight though...Need a good bond I think... Quote Link to post
DeerhoundLurcherMan 997
Tried taking the dog ferreting? Could soon learn that YOU find it those things to chase, that it clearly craves...I'm sure the dog would soon start paying attention to you when the dog susses out what you find for it... 3 Quote Link to post

Breaking is not the same as back to basics mate also have you not thought of trying the collar in an area it can't get out of the range?? Quote Link to post

Caravan Monster 323
No direct experience, but the running dog rescue organisations do seem to rate Jim Greenwood for training. Maybe worth a call ? Hope there is a happy resolution. 1 Quote Link to post
desertbred 5,490
the dog finds it more interesting to investigate things around it , salukis and x,s especially find anything on the move iresistable, I have one that as a young dog used to race with every jogger or mountain biker it saw it would see a dot on the horizon and be gone, but it always came back , if you let it have a mad 15 minutes in a safe place then go for a walk and let it follow and come to you if for example every time you call the dog you want it on the lead and either into the car or home its obvious the dog will be reluctant to play the game so vary your modus operandi so the dog gets used to following or coming to you but not lead and home.. You have to, one be the leader and two be more interesting and better to be with than the other things around it. Patience is the name of the game. skycat 6,173
You cannot expect this sort of dog to come to you, or want to be with you out of respect/fear/harsh obedience training. The Saluki didn't evolve to 'do' being trained in the way that Collies and the like have been bred for hundreds of years. If the relationship between you and your bitch hasn't already been irrevocably damaged, then all you need to do is take her hunting. Work as a team to find game: which is why ferreting is such a good base for building the team bond. Once she sees you as necessary to what she is hard wired to do (hunt) your problem will be almost solved. I strongly recommend contacting Jim Greenwood, as has already been suggested: he has more understanding of how to manage this type of dog than anyone else working in the dog behaviour world. Do it please, before you destroy the bond with your bitch completely. If it is too late, and you cannot work up enough enthusiasm, or if her behaviour has already ruined her, in your eyes, and vice versa, then do get rid of her, but at least give her a chance by placing her with Lurcherlink. 3 Quote Link to post
