walshie 2,804
I'm just toying with getting a 308 to fill the last slot on my ticket. I've looked at a Tikka T3 (1:11" twist) and a Remington 700 (1:12" twist) so they're similar-ish, but there is an enormous amount of barrel lengths to go for from 20" to 26" on various different models. I'm not limiting my choices to the 2 makes above. They're just the ones i've looked at. Any advice on the pros/cons much appreciated. Quote Link to post

charlie caller 3,654
Have a serious look at Howa/Weatherby vanguard too, seriously well engineered rifles, and brilliant value too. Quote Link to post
Born Hunter 17,751
You're looking at very similar stuff to what I hopefully will be in January mate. Be interesting to see how this thread pans out. I quite fancy either the Remmy 700 or Howa in 25-06 with something like a S&B 10x50........ Something that ain't gonna cost the Earth but isn't a compromise on performance. Edited April 7, 2014 by Born Hunter Quote Link to post

I've got a Tikka T3 in .223 with a nice short barrel and a Docter Optics 8x56, but I wondered if a 308 needs a bit more barrel length. Quote Link to post

walshie 2,804
BH. You're the boffin. Can't you just work out the different muzzle velocities for different barrel lengths for me? Quote Link to post
Born Hunter 17,751
I'm more of an experimental Physicist, I don't trust models or theory very much, lol. I need a 30" remmy and a hacksaw....... I'll get back to you with my findings. LOL Quote Link to post
CharlieT 32
BH. You're the boffin. Can't you just work out the different muzzle velocities for different barrel lengths for me? As a very rough ballpark figure recon to loose 20fps for every inch you chop. Quote Link to post
oxo 441
Had a Howa Varmint 308 that I had cut from 24" to 18" as it was a pain in the arse with a mod on stalking, shot it out to 400 on the range and deer fell over ok too, if you reload any loss on fps can be made up. Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
I have Tikkas in .223 and .243 and was advised against a Remington 700 in .308 due to it being so inferior to the Tikka.I was a little nervous but after a good look around went for one, that was 6-7 years ago, barrel length was an immediate issue and I had about 3.5-4" (can't remember exactly now) cut straight off the barrel, the stock is original, as is the whole of the rest of the rifle, and it is has the X-Mark Pro trigger. It does for me and delivers PRVI 150g SP to 1" all day! I hate floor plates though, give me a magazine every time, that is my only niggle. I am yet to find the parts that are so inferior to the Tikkas. Edited April 12, 2014 by Deker Quote Link to post
