New To Hunting Need As Much Help As Possible

Hi I have in the last year or so decided to take up air rifle hunting. I have always loved air rifles right from being a boy, although when I was younger target shooting is all I did with a .22.

Now I have started I made a silly mistake of doing not a great deal Of research before piking a rifle to use, as spring rifles is pretty much the only thing I knew I bought a relatively cheap gun a hammerli seeker 550 in a .22 but now I am really regretting it as I have trialed a few pellet and techniques and cannot get any kind of satisfying groups beyond 16 meters, I dont think it's me as I have really good results at 15 - meters and with my rifle when I was younger and in the army produced excellent results successfully gaining my cross rifles by passing my apwt in the army. So this leads my to believe it's the gun. Now I have done a lot of research into modern day rifles I.e the pcp rifles I have decided to go out and buy a bsa ultra se with hawke panorama scope as both of these seem right for me and the bsa ultra se comes with great recommendation from the legend so pittaway well a legend in my eyes anyway he really knows what he is talking about giving clear precise information coinciding with his great skills. Anyway back to the information I am after I live in bircotes doncaster and what to know how to find a local hft range to practise hunting skills as I can only get around % of the skill I need to be beneficial in my journey towards 1 day gaining a permission to hunt for real as well as info on local places maybe even people within my area to maybe meet and gain more insight from as any information at my level is much needed. Get yourself to a farmers market and start talking to the farmers about your desire to help them with pest control. You'll be amazed the results that can yield.

Want to be given a amazing piece of land to hunt on and not be ready

I will only start shooting at small game etc when I have fine tuned my skills to feel comfortable

Taking a shot to humanly kill the selected target. So that won't be until I have purchased my bsa ultra

As I don't feel my rifle consistently hits where I aim. The last thing I want is for a pigeon rabbit etc to be able to

the bloke obviously can shoot, getting out in the field is completely different to shooting targets and in my opinion the only way to learn is in a field,dont see how that makes anyone a dick, but this is THL you cant say anything with out some one starting to hurl abuse

I had kind of realised that live quarry was different to target shooting that's why I am eager to get as much info from you guys and girls that have actually done it before. Thanks for all the info especially on local hft which is only 20 mins from me I can't wait to get down there and have a go.

He says he can shoot full bore and good for him, however he asks twice about clubs and wanting to get his air gun skills up before taking on quarry and then gets 2 posts telling him to just get stuck in.

I've supplied him with 3 clubs in his area who will help him set up his rifle, give advice on shooting springers and PCP's, and when he is confident of his kit he can go off permission finding.

 

I suppose I could have read your post differently and you could have been suggesting that he shoots some none live targets on a permission to get used to the gun and pellet trajectories at varying distances, but I read it as you were suggesting he takes his brand new kit and takes his first shot at something live.

 

Anyway, welcome Matt and I hope you fine a good club and a permission if you want one.

im not talking about shooting, he can shoot his post states that, to learn field craft , stalking , walking in woodland listening to animals and learning where to find them and there signs, cant be learnt in a firing range,he needs to walk round some perm and take shots at random objects, not live prey, but to learn shooting through a bush, leaning on walls gates etc, look around him adjust to weather conditions etc, and he might just find the perfect shot at a target species, ive never been in a gun club , thats how i learnt, and yes good luck matt

Hi Matt, welcome to the forum.

You can obviously shoot as the army crossed rifle tells us so but you are concerned over shooting at live quarry just yet ?

Purely a humble suggestion but a local outdoor field target club, hft (hunter field target) club would be ideal for you. The lads/ladies that use these clubs know their rifles. trajectory,scopes you name it and a hft club simulates hunting

There are lots of very good people on this forum Matt who know air rifles/ hunting inside out , I`m sure you`ll get all the answers you need.
