Ideation 8,216
One thing I've been thinking since I read this last night . . . . . it made me reflect back upon the standards thread. I think at the end of the day, whether they admit it to themselves or others, or not . . . . . most of the folk on here, and most of the people into dogs, just don't require anything that's particularly outstanding. Most 'decent enough' dogs will do. . . . . catch a few rabbits on the lamp, do a bit of ferreting, hunt up cover a bit, maybe kill the odd fox here or there, pull a couple of deer. Their owners are out for the enjoyment of being out, and working their dogs, and they enjoy it whether they catch or not, as long as they catch enough from time to time. That's not an insult, that's just the facts of life. It's just that some folk accept, and admit that, and other still try to create fantasies around themselves and their dogs. However, having said all that . . . . those people are lucky as hell, that there are lads out there that have the brutal drive and determination to seek out the very best of the very best, and test it hard, to keep these good lines going. Sure they will throw duffers, but they manage to throw a few outstanding dogs to. . . . and it's these dogs that ultimately strengthen a gene pool. . . . . and give people the ability to breed with consistency, rather than just taking a chance and accepting whatever they have until the next one. Or something like that . . . . 3 Quote Link to post

clipo 871
its like a cake whats missing what needs to be added and hope for the best puppy peddlers use names and paper work and there all lies and shit I've got to be honest as soon as I hear a name dropped I switch off............................Amount of litters I've advertised with certain names in the blood begs belief. Some dogs must be on the job constantly or .....................and more than likely the peddlers are full of shitethink you missed the word "seen" out there mate...... 1 Quote Link to post

clipo 871
Yh that's a fair point johnny. Rabbiters with bullxs and daywalkers with colliexs sort of thing bit is that perhaps they're tryna make a name or just don't like the type of dog suited to there hunting? What a load of shite!!! Why cant bull crosses make good rabbit dogs then?? And your saying collie cross cant catch hares in daytime?? Edited April 6, 2014 by clipo Quote Link to post

Why cant bull crosses make good rabbit dogs then?? And your saying collie cross cant catch hares in daytime?? Aye they both can. . . . . but I think if I was going to be ferreting a few times a week, every week . . . . a half x bull/grey might not be my first choice, and if I was on the fens every week of the season . . . . I might not pick a half x collie/grey. Obviously you get dogs that just defy logic. . . . . . but there is a reason why some dogs are mostly selected for certain tasks . . . . . and to argue against that doesn't make sense. . . . . . It goes back to picking a pup that's parents do what you want the pup to do. . . . and very well. For example, if you were a foxing man. . . . dedicated to hunting charlie. . . . would you go and get a coursing bred pup? No probably not, no matter how well bred that pup was, or how many legends were in it . . . . . . it would end up looking foolish most likely. Same as if you were a professional rabbit controller. . . . . you may not get a pup out of two bull x fox slaying machines . . . . . even at the top of their game . . . . . they probably wouldn't throw the best ferreting dog available. Ideation said exactly what I was going to, of course those dogs can the same as you can knock in a nail with a lump hammer but don't mean a chippy is going to use one does it Quote Link to post

Realised I don't know it all but I'd like to think I know a fair deal. How long you've been in it means f**k all, know blokes my old mans age that have been into hunting since the 70s-80s and are no further than when they started all those years ago. Still making silly mistakes and still acting like amateurs Quote Link to post
