4X4 Lamping

Recommended Posts

you deff see more game , and suppose if its lamp shy you might get the dog on to it quicker, but most of mine been on foot over the years . when I went to whins we done it 1 night but Bryn wouldn't run along the side of motor, he tried to get back in he must have thought we had left him out lol .So we went on foot he the next night and Bryn started knocking them over easy, but suppose slipping the dog (from) the motor could have been ok

I bet if it wasn't possible to lamp from a motor there wouldn't be half as many lads keeping lurcher's.

Trouble is when most people talk about lamping from a 4x4 they picture a Subaru screaming across a stubble field and having 1/2 crosses thrown out the windows at quarry which will be left behind after

So many lurcher lads these days all talk about kill kill kill.   If that's what your after get a 22.250 and a thermal imaging kit, you will be a legend within the week   Id prefer to be out enjoy

Is there any advantages/disadvantages of lamping out a 4x4?

Is it true that lads throw the dogs out the windows/doors whilst at speed in pursuit of their quarry?

Is it lazyness or are these lads seeing more rabbits than the lads who walk?

just curious

Done a fair bit of lamping from a truck,... it certainly is incredibly exciting,.no fecking doubts about that :toast:

Its a great way to get into gear,..especially on large open areas and big scrubby pastures,..in fact,..you can sometimes be into a herd of critters before they know it,..however, you do need the right type of area, to use a truck to its best advantage.I used to lamp over a large acreage that held loads of rabbits and Roe,.the problem was, you had to keep stopping the vehicle, climb out, undo every fecking gate,.then shut the fecker behind you,.it went on and on,..honestly it done my head in.. :censored:

Far easier to simply slip under the wire fence,.. and keep on walking..

Back in the late 1980s/early 1990s, I went on the rabbits every night,..

We travelled all over the South Coast and regularly took 40s and 50s with a single dog,...it was great...

Facts are, although I still go out with a few lads in their 4x4s,..my biggest ever catches of rabbits,.(same as Tomo),. were always made on foot.

Sometimes, I get the urge to go out and purchase a bad boy truck and 'live the life'... but then, I think how foolish it would be to own a vehicle, that in reality, would just be a rich mans plaything,...got to be realistic..I'm only an occasional lamper these days,.so I'll stick to me trusty Astra Van

using a motor only has its benefits on vast open arable land imo small enclosed fields arnt worth the hassle of driving and better off walked. from my experience long in the past fox and deer were best quarry suited for using a 4x4 rabbits and hares have a habbit of backing towards the motor
