Black Red 0
Many years ago I hunted a bit with the Kerry beagle clubs in the Cahirciveen/Waterville area. I think there was 7 clubs- all hare. Are there any clubs hunting fox now? I think the nearest was about Castleisland? I heard the Waterville Beagles were flushing foxes - are they still going? I hope to get back there in the near future. Quote Link to post
thefootman 17
I have not hunted in Kerry myself but I would know lads in Monaghan who have been down to Kerry. To my knowledge there are still packs around Caherciveen, Waterville Portmagee and Kenmare. I hope to head down that way myself somethime. As far as I know they hunt the same as the northern foot packs they would intend to hunt hare but if they meet a fox they will hunt it as well. The Kerry Beagles Association has a website covering drag hunts, http://kerrybeagle.blogspot.ie/ check it out, there are some contact details on it. Quote Link to post
Black Red 0
Many thanks, thefootman. The Irish Foot Harrier Association should have a list, as the Clubs were members for the insurance - but there are no details online. The Kerry Beagle site is interesting and I wonder if a split is happening between trail and hunting hounds (as happened in N. England long since} Quote Link to post
thefootman 17
I'm not aware of any split, as far as I know the same club members who keep drag dogs keep beagles for hunting, while years ago foot harriers/beagles were used for drag hunting now nearly all drag hunting is done with trail hounds that were imported originally from the lake district by the Cork clubs back in the 50s and 60s. That said in the North there are still one or two drags run every year for harriers only. Quote Link to post
Black Red 0
Hope they have sense enough to keep the trail hound blood out of the harriers - it never worked with Fellhounds in the long run. Thing was, some Fell Huntsmen kept trailhounds and kept trying it and ended up with rubbish. Quote Link to post

I have hunted with the Waterville/Dromid lads - all hare Serious day out and always great to see them call off the 'beagles' when she is tired...as a result serious amount of hares in the area. There are a few lads down there hammering the foxes by lamp so not much going on in terms of hunting them - with all the sheep down there they dont want them around at all. They have had a few lamps taken from some wild foxes - I shot a nice fox down there in Jan. I know a few foot hounds in cork have some of these hounds blood in there pack as they are serious dogs for covering ground Quote Link to post
Black Red 0
Must be over 20 years since I hunted there and some of the clubs were so short of hares they were restocking - foxes were turning up with all the new forestry and the ground was sick with too many sheep. I was told of 5 foxes lamped in one night even back then and thought there was scope for a fox pack , maybe on a Saturday so as not to clash. Good to hear that the clubs are going well now. I I was through one summer maybe ten years ago and my contacts in Cahirciveen were gone. Quote Link to post
