Daz39 962
Had a few hours out last night with Mac and Tomma. Met up around 8 and after sorting the scopes, Mac went off on his personal crusade against a couple of rabbits that keep teasing him, Tomma and I hit the main fields. We spotted a rabbit pretty early on and tried to keep the lamp off it. I went from to around 30 yrds, just about to go down for a shot and thought I’d check the rabbit position, I put the lamp up and the rabbit was gone….no sign at all. Carried on round the 1st field and I spotted a pair of rabbits by a pylon. I stalked from 50-30 yards, went prone and took a shot at the first one, missed, no idea what happened, but both rabbits ran. One stupidly only went 10 yards, so I went to what I thought was 30 yrds, prone and hit him bang in the back of the nappa. I paced the shot to 35 yrds exactly. Crap pic but you get the point. We moved into the next field and I said I’d lamp for Tomma. We spotted 2 rabbits in the corner so I sent Tomma off after them. As he moved closer a 3rd rabbit was in view. The street lamps were casting enough light not to need the lamp, but sadly also to illuminate Tomma and just as he went to take a knee, they were off. I gave Tomma a choice of laying up or going to the 3rd field, he said he wanted to go off, so I said I’d stay and see if these 3 came back out. For him to go scout the 3rd field and pick me up on the way back. Well, the 3 didn’t come back out…..and Tomma didn’t come back for me! After 25 mins I decided to go back to the car, only to find Tomma and Mac stuffing sarny’s down their necks. “Where did you go” I ask….only to be told that both he AND Mac had been stood behind me for 5 mins and didn’t want to disturb me! Talk about mental focus haha. After some bait Mac went back to the crusade and I took Tomma onto another perm that borders this one. As soon as we put foot on the field I spotted 1 rabbit with the lamp but he ran right away. As I turned, I saw another 3 run through a fence into my work perm….which I cant get onto for another 4 weeks due to issues with a certain tree hugging group. We walked the bottom line of the field and I spotted a set of eyes near a hedge, I sent Tomma off again and he stalked to around 25 yrds and took a shot, but it was into some branches and I think he hit a twig or something. As we moved up the hill, again, 2-3 rabbits ran like mad when the red lamp came close. Round the back of the field the numbers were very low, 1 here, 1 there where normally I expect to see 10-15. At one point we split round an island of trees and I saw 1 rabbit, running again with the lamp, only to see a fox chasing right after him into the undergrowth! The last bit of excitement for the night was when I saw a rabbit in perfect silhouette next to a tree, this was Mac’s fave spot on my perm, again I sent Tomma off. He stalked to a good 25 yrds, went to go prone and as he put the rifle down “click” the leg on the bipod must have clicked into position. Off went the rabbit. Tomma followed it and spotted 2-3 more but they ran off. We decided to lay up and sat there about 20 mins, just as I thought the rabbits must be about to make an entrance, a car pulls up and a bloke jumps out and runs right where the rabbits were! We stood up and saw another couple walking back from the pub, the guy spotted the rifles and spent 20 mins telling us how he used to hunt with his HW35, 30 years ago, pretty much walking from field to field as he liked, bagging sacks full of rabbits 3-4 times a week…………yawn…………. Adventure over, nothing else out last night. A bit foggy and cold, but still the skittish rabbits won. I wouldn’t be shocked to know that the numbers are down due to mixy, I can only hope the new kits grow fast and have no idea what a red lamp means!! So, only the one for me, Tomma isn’t far off bagging his first, and the rabbit v Mac contest came out in favour of the fluffy bunny…..this time…. 3 Quote Link to post
