clipo 871
went out for a mooch this afternoon and quite proud of the three mutts!!! walked a good 5 miles along the canal and then you crossover into a nature reserve that you cut through and leads you to a nice bit of ground to mooch around for 4 miles on theway home. anyway started going through the reserve and the youngest bitch starts eating something, so i shout at her and see shes eating this shit ( ) but i was stuffed as to what it was!!! then seen these tracks...... but cant ever remember seeing a sheep on here and they look different to any sheep ive seen....... anyway keep marching on with dogs kept back as itsa reserve and technically shouldnt be there and then it happened!!!! was walking down a little path and my bull cross was in the cover to the right when all of a sudden these black sheep came flying out the other end...... my old bitch set of to chase them, which set the youngest off and then my bull x came out and joined in and i thought "OH SHIT" but the training ive gave them over the years set in and all three just stopped as i shouted them and watched them run off!!!!! im convinced they all only chased them as there black but f**k me was i relieved when they stopped as right over the other side of the field was 4x4 so i f****d off pretty sharpish!!!! anyone else had close calls like that???? on the way back i went over some old ground thats being turned into a quarry....... real shame as it was good rabbit land!!! all land like this.....big open fields and nice thick hedgerows....... slowly being eaten away...... there cutting the telegraph poles down now that went across the land....... wonder where the copper earth strip ended up........ there using the poles to build ospreys nests round the reserve tho!!! sure the local angling clubs will be happy........ 1 Quote Link to post

Ideation 8,216
Yep, i've had it a lot matey. We see sheep here pretty much every day, and the dogs are around them all of the time, both in the field, and in barns etc. However, some sheep, just don't look like, act or smell like sheep. We get a lot of hill sheep, which are semi wild, and often sheep in the forestry blocks which are pretty much feral, the dogs put them up, and they jump out of the cover in ones or twos and go bouncing off through the bracken and gorse, often barely sighted by the dogs. And they are dark coloured. It sets the dogs off and quite often they give a bit of a chase, until they can see what it is, or until you shout 'SHEEP'. . . . which is a command we have to teach them lol. I've twice had young dogs make contact and then realise what it is and spit it out looking horrified! Interestingly, they must smell different as well, because when the hound was younger and I had started flushing a lot of deer with her, although she was broken to sheep visually, and when hunting lowland, filtered out their scent, when in the hills, she would often hunt off on a line baying, only to push a sheep out of cover and then look very confused! After a little while she figured it out and can now tell the difference it seems. 2 Quote Link to post

irishnut 297
sometimes the nature reserves only want to maintain a certain head of sheep on their land to keep the grass at a manageable level, so they run ewes only. they usually go for a traditional/native hardy breed that can cope well outside all year. 2 Quote Link to post
