Not many if any will beat That Hunter v Pickering fight for atmosphere They gave it their all Exitement guts game ness determination from start to finish With a British' Comonwealth and European title on the line. What is atmosphere Max ?......Noise ?...................I can walk into the backyard of the Bricklayers Arms and watch 2 rough boys fight for 50 quid and get an atmosphere like that..............atmosphere is about more than just noise....... Im probably a bit biased towards the York Hall as i fought there myself a few times,but many fighters who have fought there will say the same,its a special place.......ive been in there when its full up.....and near silent !!!..........it is a scarey intimidating atmosphere as a fighter,you know there is knowledgable eyes on you up close,you know the history of the place,people in the balconies can almost touch you.......the atmosphere is in the air not coming out of peoples mouths....you cant just create that its either there or its not.....as a fighter you can easily get lost in noise,you cant get lost in silence ! So how many world champions was that again Max ?...................NONE ? Ps while we talking about boxing and Hartlepool is getting a mention Could someone stick up the fight at Hartlepool Borough Hall between Michael Hunter and Esham Pickering It was for the European Title What a fight What a Atmosphere I think even Gnash would admit even a East End Venue would struggle to create a better Atmosphere. Can Someone give all Fight Fans a treat and stick it up.? I think it's in 6 parts . Lost to an east end lad, no idea of his name but was a decent boxer, this was around 20 odd years ago lol.... It looks like a great venue, and a proper bear pit with the balcony. Think I'd much rather spend my cash watching a show like Prizefighter in the York Hall, than sitting 200 rows from ringside at Wembley watching Froch v Groves. As a pure boxing fan the York Hall is hard to beat for atmosphere.......as a fighter its near impossible to beat for atmosphere......but for casual fans and the football crowd who just want a sing song and a knees up its probably not the best venue as it only holds less than 1500 people..........the atmosphere is within the place itself,even the walk up the steps outside gets your pulse racing................part of the atmosphere as a fighter is that you are trying to live up to whats gone before you,within a mile of York Hall is at least 3 top pro gyms and 3 top amateur gyms so the area breathes the sport and always has... The Prizefighter thing tonight will just be a bunch of screaming casual fight fans and friends/family etc.................ive fought in there when its full and you can hear a pin drop......you look around the ring and its all ex fighters and knowledgable boxing people young and old.........its the Madison Square Garden of Europe. Definately mate.....i hate it......i dont really know why it is........its almost as though the gentlemans noble art respectfullness is being replaced by yob culture................i remember a time when you wouldnt see women at boxing anywhere in the country,today theres as many women as men its a bit like football i suppose as in its become a bit trendy to have a night out and a sing song/knees up at the boxing......where years ago like i say around ringside would be full of ex fighters and well known faces of the day.......................like anything i suppose its bums on seats that matter these days. I remember my old flea and uncles going to watch fights and they always dressed smart ... The last fight I watched was Audley Hayes and I drees fairly smart but casual for the night but there were fellas there in vest t shirts and trackie bottoms ... If there was a dress code and they re introduced it I wonder if would add a bit of class to the events and keep the yob culture at bay ??? ......... Quote Link to post Share on other sites
gnasher16 30,280 Posted April 5, 2014 Author Report Share Posted April 5, 2014 Obviously there still is a dress code at the dinner shows but even at York Hall you wouldnt dream of turning up in t shirt and jeans i dont remember there being doorman as such it was just generally accepted that you turned up respectful.....Shoreditch Town Hall,Royal Albert Hall the old Wembley Arena i dont ever remember people turning up in vests and trackie bottoms....................maybe its a sign of the times we live in eh ! I take your point Gnasher..and the Prizefighter thing was maybe a bad example. The point I wanted to make is that being close to the action and hearing the punches going in is the buzz in watching boxing. Paying 50 quid to sit half a mile away, and watching most of it on a big screen suspended above the ring...you may as well be at a football match. Times have changed and maybe so have the crowds going to watch boxing. The bigger profile an event has, and the more it's advertised etc., the more people will be attracted to go to it. The big arena shows will always bring in less 'knowledgeable' fans (but then they probably always have), and well publicised shows like Prizefighter are maybe even targetting the casual punter looking for something different from a night out. Can't see it being a bad thing overall...at least the boxers get a bit of exposure and a pay day. Sky has made boxing and boxers more accessible to the masses than ever before. Gyms are full and there's a real interest in boxing and the sport seems to have a newfound respect and credibility among general sports fans. It's not too long ago that boxing was receiving quite a bit of negative press with calls from the BMA for a total ban. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
