air gun ant 1,666
We'll, I'm one of these that always has a project in mind, (usually 4 or 5 lol ) and apart from building a caravan (which I've now got a chassis to start from) I've always had a love of the water. I'm 28 now and have always had a boat of some sort. Started with kayaks and dinghys, and progressed to canal cruisers. I've started from shipwrecks and still have them lol but I've always loved pissing about in dinghys!!!! I've not had one for a while and while looking thru the usual sites I came across a set of molds for a 10'6 dinghy and thought, i'd rather build than buy!!!!!! Part of what we do at work is composite repair, and I have been put on to some good contacts for materials which are all certified with a lloyds boat building certificate. Also I've done a course in it, and have just about all the support and knowledge anybody could want if starting a venture like this. So who would be Intrested in buying one And who can offer any advice? Has anybody on here done it before? Cheers ant

Pin it on with copper screw and copper wire Edited April 18, 2014 by gonetoearth
GruffaloGriff 1,859
My uncle allways said a boat is a hole in the water you throw money into! I realised the truth of this when i rebuilt 15.5' clinker built dingy. I got the boat for nothing so thought i was on a winner. Paint alone was £120 other bits £100 and about 100 hours labour, steaming & bending all new ribs, repacing gunwhales, stripping & painting etc etc. not so cheap at the end of the day but is was a fun project,
air gun ant 1,666
i always heve a couple on the go mate lol your uncles right!! having said that, its a great sence of accomplishment when your bobbing around catching fish in something youve built/restored. i recently got a 17ft dory pretty much given, checked for the usual "soggy bottom" and all seemed fine, apart from the transom had been cut to take a short shaft and all i had was a long shaft. not much of problem but when i started removing the old glass, you guessed it water had got in and the whole transom was fecked! so a small job turned to a big job but its a job thats been done and now its back to proper hight and stronger than ever, and i know its been done right, now theres a fault with the engine lol!!!! get some pics up fella, i for one would love a look at your hard work

Tiercel 6,986
I started my netting career in one of those, great boats for estuaries and lakes. They just glide through the water and once you get them going so easy to row. We had a little seagull engine on ours but rarely used it. Rabid 1,936
Am just finishing my 24 foot sea fishing boat, not totally built by me, but stripped to just a bare hull and cabin, and fully built back up, loads of time and money, but actually loved every minute of it.
