Ferret Castration Vs Coil

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.

I have recently joined this forum and I hope that I am posting this to the correct place.

I would like to get some help from anyone who can help me with some of my questions.

I have 2 Ferrets, One Hob and a Jill. My Jill is currently pregnant, and due any day now. So I know that my Hob is obviously doing the right thing. This happened almost 2 months ago now, and I think that my Hob has recently just overloaded with testosterone.

He is usually very well behaved, doesn't bite or hasn't done since he was nipping as a little baby which he soon stopped, he cuddles and plays and is inquisitive like they are meant to be, however over the last week he has started biting me, literally going for my feet or my hands. I cant even pick him up without him wanting to latch onto my hand. He doesn't go for m partner who is a male and so I was thinking that it may be that he is just too horny and doesn't know what to do with himself.

At first he just smelled my hands and feet and didn't really do much and now he wont even let me walk around without trying to climb up my leg and wrap himself on me. He wont stop until he gets me. He is now outside all day and night and only comes in when he goes to sleep and even then I can't bring him in my partner has to as he will bite me.

The vet has said that this could be due to the fact that his hormone levels are sky high and he obviously is frustrated. Now the options to getting back to his normal old self was to have the coil fitted or to have him castrated. I do not have any idea as to which one of these options would be the better one, and I also don't just want to go for the cheaper option because I would rather do the right thing. Where is will be back to his healthy normal playful self.

Would getting him castrated cause that disease people say they can get or is the chances of that very slim?

Is the coil better or shall I just get them snipped and that be the end of it? I don't plan on working any of them, so I am just looking for some advice on the best option as I don't want him to go through this and I of course don't want to be bitten.

Please can any of you give me advice that would help me so much.

Thank you

Hobs and Bobs.

Castration. He`s not gonna get any calmer through the summer. Castration wont cause any disease, it will take away all his urges and the female will find it easier living with him pemanently as he wont be trying to have his way all the time.

His hormones are sky high just now mate castrating him will make a difference in a month or two when his hormones settle down , But then you need to think how you going to bring your jill out of season

Ive always had mine castrated and always lived long and happy lifes. No smell either lol and it does not affect working ability in fact makes working them easier as you can put two in same box without scrapping.

Definitely get him castrated. You'll be amazed at the difference. The way I see it its like turning a moody, frustrated and horny teenager back into an innocent child, more playful and nicer smelling. Your ferret will develop a stronger bond with you and your other ferret. Trust me it may be expensive but its definitely the best option if you don't plan to use him for breeding. :)

Out of interest, how long do your castrated hobs live on average?
