Diy Silencer For A Springer Air Rifle ?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

As a newbie with his first air rifle. I have seen various designs of silencer on the internet and would be grateful to know if these are likely to be worth the effort of making them for a springer rifle ?

Am I likeley to get enhanced noise reduction to keep my neighbours happy ?

Any advice will be much appreciated- many thanks,

Rob.

they do work on a spring gun , but it seems to me any thing you add to a spring gun changes the point of impact .If you make a moderator it will also have to no move when cocking a shooting the gun AT ALL .A bit of floppy plastic pipe may stop the sound but may not aid accuracy .A lot of the sound from a spring gun is the mechanical spring and stuff that can be quietened down or get a good gun like tx 200 is quiet by design .Or shoot from inside a room through a slightly open door or window into a pile of rags for your target .Make sure you are well in the room and back from the door or window .The room will then act as a moderator .

What model are you shooting that you think is so noisy?

Most springers are a lot quieter than you realise - they seem noisy because your ear is close to the spring.

Also don't use a noisy back-stop - box full of rags is superb !

Welcome,

One thing you quickly find mate is silencers are much much more complex than one might think and millions are invested in their design and manufacture, another thing to consider is whether or not a silencer is warranted, most of the noise in a springer comes from the action being close to your ear, try this, the next time your out with your gun, get a friend to shoot it and you stand around 35 yards away and see what you think then, also check for deiseling as this will drastically increase mussel crack. Hope this helps mate, all the best with your ventures :)

The noise from my springers always seemed loud - until I asked a mate to shoot it - with me ahead ( and safely to one side ) . I was suprised ! Only the briefest "Phut ....." That was a .22 BSA springer near enough to full power with lightweight pellet . Compressed air and Co2 will sound louder as the gases are expanding as they are expelled .

But like as like I thought it nice to try and get one made as per this thread . Very good effort and worth fettling some if you have skill or know someone who can so this for you . Custom shrouds - they are normally slip on affairs , and I know from experience that alignment is the cause of missed shots . I once used a tuned Co2 airrfile capable of tight groups at 30 metres - and I could not get one pellet on target ..........the Shroud had moved offcentre by a fraction of an inch . Most now advocate getting your barrel machined with a thread - usually 1/2 " unf to match a pre manufactured silencer and improve aim . You need to be able to machine concentric to the bore not the outside of the barrel , as believe it or not , some barrels are bored offcentre .

Things get complicated and expensive , but a simple way is to make your own slip on , and open out the end hole if any doubts as to the barrel . Some ally tubing and then add some machined ends / buy an adapter for your barrel diam. online for a tenner and away you go . You can fill the interior with wire wool , nylon scourers and all manner of things - obviously making sure the pellet can get through untouched each and every shot - use spacers to act as baffles and / or strong glues to keep things ship shape .
