Is It Just Bitches Or What !?

Recommended Posts

I have a 2 yr old collie x who has always been a little nervous/skittish not of other dogs but strange ppl and different situations. I now have a 5 month bull x and she's the same but worse ! I've had her out this morning for some 1 on 1 training. Anyhow first 2 times I threw the dummy she collected ran straight past me and over the other side of the field to the gate. I called her she looked and carried on walking off. So I started running the other way to which she gave chase. Weird never done that before recall and retrieve have always been spot in until this morning. Anyhow she's been a little nervy from day 1 but I just put it down to being a pup. On our way out the field we came across some old dear with her 2 jacks. When these jacks passed us the pup shit herself, jumping pulling on lead wtf !? Apart from being embarrassing it's fecking annoying. I even went to a show the wkend and the lads there said "nice dog, bit skittish though" pissed off to say the least this morning

Have you had them both from young pup or bought in later?

Had them both from 8 weeks old, Ive never hit the dog and it's always been around other dogs. I'm pissed right off if I'm honest. I bought this dog to work on stuff my collie x won't. Now this things turnt out skittish and nervous too I'm wondering if it's gonna be any good for the type of work I want it for.

i find it much easier to train a dog rather than a bitch, i don't know why or if it is just my methods but my bitch i have at the moment is really stubborn, i've had success in the field with her on quarry but i'm not happy with where she is at the moment, does anyone else find it harder to bring on a bitch than a dog?

Not sure then mate iv had dog and bitch pups in the last year neither been skittish and havnt got enough experience to say why yours are being like it ! Only thing mine are up on my uncles yard they are always around terriers adult lurchers and farm animals !

It may just that they inherited the nervousness or as its two separate types it may be you or whoever walks them that’s making them act that way but being a little skittish as a pup or even an adult doesn’t mean it won't do the job when the lamp goes on. My last bitch was always a nervy sort until she found a fecking fox.

Having had 1 of both I found training the bitch easier than the dog. I found that the bitch was more loyal and willing to please.

The dog I have got is a different story, he trains well but will go to anybody and has the occasional selective deafness. But took him out the other night and he did everything asked perfect.

But I can't make a full judgement due to only ever having 2 lurchers and they were 2 different types of lurcher so that could have something to do with it aswell.

As for dogs being nervy it's either down to dogs parents or owner training methods. Advice wise just do what gas been said socialize as much as possible

i've got a 13 month old bitch who's not so much skittish, but very immature and excitable, especially with other dogs, honestly it's like she's 3 months old when she's around them, acting like a right daft thing, recall is ok but have to be on at her constantly with it, and if there's another dog about i might as well forget about it.

Anyway, i decided to hold her back from lamping or even seeing a bunny as thought she's not steady enough, all went out of the window the other morning when she spotted a big red in the field, i only wanted her for bunnies but lets just say she did a good job...surprised the hell out of me.

Maybe it is a bitch thing, but i'm sure when yours 'switches on' you might be pleasantly surprised

All pups go throw stages, some more than others. Could be a million diffrent things, could be our attitude? Could be perfectly normal, how many lurchers have you had? No judging if these are your first, but lurchers ain't for everybody, most are sensitive no matter the type, even the big bad bullx is usually as soft as fook with folk. Most pups iv had don't like folk walking behind then, can't relax always looking back. They grow out of it tho, but as a rule lurchers are more sensitive and highly strung as pups than most other breeds or types

She's socialized with 4 or 5 different dogs regular + any we meet whilst out walking. She's fine with my older dog and gets stuck right into her. Here's a video

And another it's the pup that's growling !

I've had lurchers all my life but always had dogs, none were nervous or skittish. Very bold outgoing no messing types. But thought if try bitches this time.
