day and night walker 235
Hi chad try getting a dead rabbit and gee her up with it even let her have a chomp on it also keep taking her out but try to take her out on her own and not with lurchers because young dogs tend to follow the older ones or even better if you know any one with a bushing dog ask if you can tag along. She may be timid now but keep getting her out and you should see a different dog emerge good luck and atb daywalker. ps try and find somewhere where their are sum mixy rabbits they can do wonders for bringing a dog on. 1 Quote Link to post

wuyang 513
Did you say she's 6 months....,, when I got my first jack russelI pup I was only young and expected too much too soon...tending to think the fault was with the pup, which it wasn't.....I used to push it too forcefully in the right direction of the rabbits, getting pissed off with the young dog.....don't make the mistake I did. Chill out and take your time walk around hedgerows where you know there's rabbits, in time the penny will drop. Give her plenty of fuss....no shouting through been frustrated that she's not yet doing what you expect her to be doing. If she is just 6 months then the making of the dog lies with you. From working strains are not a jack russell will work rabbits all day long if entered right. Build her confidence....play a gentle game ...tug of war etc. My best bushing dog I've owned my 11 year old jack russell from non working lines. Just be careful and try to discourage her from going down the holes if she shows any inclination to go down further than a good head and sniff. 1 Quote Link to post

Richard Warwick 50
i'd just get her out over commons and rough land as much as possible, and throw things in the bushes for her to look for, if she's bred for it she should pick it all up in due course Quote Link to post
Chad Main 4
She won't chase things into cover and yes been walking over rough ground constantly she did ok today had a shake on a skin and walked alot of rough ground all the rest will hopefully come in time Quote Link to post

Hands of Stone 154
Break her to ferrets is your number 1 job (if you want her ferreting) then just keeper taking her to out and about.... if she is a baby in cover, try throwin some raw meet into long grass..... begin with a couple of feet away then when she gets the idea build up distance..... take it steady and often and she'll be flying by next season....... hopefully!! Chad Main 4
In give these ago only had her about a week so still settling in I'll take my time with her problem is she don't like chasing by cover she is scared lol Quote Link to post
wuyang 513
I would hazard a guess that the pup has lots of potential. Your worrying when there's no need to. Slow down, let it be a pup. You've only owned it a week and worrying that it's not showing potential. Just let experience new things slowly......don't get frustrated. Seriously just let it be a pup. When you've built yours dogs confidence up do you know anybody else who bushes that you could take your dog with? Quote Link to post
jcm 2,327
If you have only had the pup for one week I wouldn't even bother taken her out yet I'd spend a few weeks bonding with the pup then get her out in plenty time Quote Link to post
longbow 14
Just enjoy the puppy phase. It will not need any encouragement to chase, ALL dogs enjoy chasing rabbits, this time next year you won't be able to keep it out of the hedgerows if you wanted to. Quote Link to post
