the big chief 3,099
I don't see nowt wrong with trying to better what you've got, but an obsession with having better than everyone else I find a wee bit odd. That's where the bullshit comes in! I've never met a good dog man who was much concerned with what other folk had. I don't see nowt wrong with trying to better what you've got, but an obsession with having better than everyone else I find a wee bit odd. That's where the bullshit comes in! I've never met a good dog man who was much concerned with what other folk had. there is a lad from my village what just that bigs his dog up no end i have seen this dog in action and its not all that he fails to mention he trebled up most of the time on anything when i was with him i wouldn't slip what he ran made that dog look very very silly the lad said i don't know what's up with my dog i replied i do there ain't 2 more dogs in the run the lad wasn't sporting at all kept telling me to let my dog off balls to that made him look a c**t and rightly so Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
While I love seeing a good dog work, I also appreciate an average dog giving 100% I think that's my standards right there........ Some good posts lads. What's an average dog? Can you put it into words? Maybe not? Quote Link to post

Some good posts lads. What's an average dog? Can you put it into words? Maybe not? Mine goes out he no world beater never gets the chance to see big numbers but from the first slip till the last that dog will try 100% never gives up , I do believe if I travelled with him to places with more game on a regular basis he could of been one of these bummed up stud dogs Quote Link to post
DeerhoundLurcherMan 997
While I love seeing a good dog work, I also appreciate an average dog giving 100% I think that's my standards right there........ Some good posts lads. What's an average dog? Can you put it into words? Maybe not? A good mate of mine has three lurchers, two I would call average, they kill enough to keep most happy, this isn't knocking a dog, but some would take offence to it. But the other is in a league of his own when it comes down to lamping rabbits, big or small..... Now I love to watch the goodun, but I am just as happy to watch the other two because they both always give 100%.... Some of the best runs I have ever seen was from one of the two......And you wouldn't believe how the dog was bred.....But that's not important... I just love watching a dog run, doesn't matter what breed or speed, so long as you can see the dog try its best... 1 Quote Link to post
lurcherandterriemanchris 14
I think now days people are more worried about what there dogs can and not do and worry what people think about them then getting out in the field doing what we love doing the most either it be bushing ferreting lumping or just meeting up with a good friend and having a good chat and walk with the dogs I see in the site non stop people slating other peoples dog which is not on everyone can say what they like about peoples dogs but at the end of the day who cares I have my own standards with my dogs and asking they come back when I say Im pretty much happy but other peoples standards are a lot higher then mine and I would never in my wildest dreams slate someone for that or there dogs I have for myself seen lady gaz's bitch run a few good times and my I say that dog can f***ing put a good night shift in and feel the bag up and trust with this bitch there no ifs or buts it's bang straight on ball on the game not letting the game have a inch shit or or bust as they say I think now days people have lost there way with running dogs either your a bull cross man or you hate them I love myself all type of running dogs either it be a whippet to a massive deerhound I m very lucky to see some of the finest bull crosses work even tho it's not my type of game I would never slate the man for what he dose with he's dogs that's he's game not min end when it comes to standards they all change from every dog man in this country I think people forget the fact of self enjoyment It doesn't matter what people's standards just worry about what your doing just get out there no enjoy this beautiful sport that we all love dearly too much talk and not enough action where all in the same boat !!!!! MIK 4,756
I believe that any dog has the potential to be a good dog if your willing to put the time and effort in to get him/her to a standard which you are happy with. But good breeding does help and can make the difference between a good dog and a excellent dog. As long as your happy with how your dog works and it gets the job done who can call you on it. Most off these people who call everyone else's dogs useless but there own are full of s**t you can't have perfect dogs all the time. I agree to an extent. I know 2 decent dog men that have had runners for 30 odd years and a handful of dogs in that time. And they have all made the grade. Is that down to luck? Good rearing, good food and a good kennel won't give the dog them extra minerals required when the going gets tough. Wether that was doing fox and hare pre ban or trying to get 100 rabbits on the lamp today. There is a fine line between making the grade and an animal that is worth breeding from ...I have a bitch she has just done her second season and imo she has made the grade and I have high standards the bitch has nearly everything I want and I can guarantee most would kennel this bitch ...but I doubt if I will ever breed from her . And thats where it comes down to honesty being honest with yourself ....for me breeding a litter is something I dont take lightly and is only done in my case if myself and others are needing youngsters on the ground so everything in the mix has to be bang on cause the last thing I want is to be 3 years down the line and im looking for another pup to bring on 1 Quote Link to post
Wales1234 5,491
It all boils down to the aslong as the dog pleases you what matter does it make?? My bitch sky would make a cracking lamping bitch but its not really my thing yeaaa shes lamped and run well but my passion is hunting and iv seen dogs that would make top class day dogs but are lamped till they no longer want to range and hunt there quarry comes down to personal preferences ! I might be a chopsy little shit when im out but I do taking in alot what the boys I hunt with say but sometimes what they think is a good dog is I dont and dogs I think are goood they dont again come to your personal preferences Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
That's a very good point. I expect some things in some of my dogs that would make them useless to another man. And I see some 'good dogs' on here that really are for what their owners use them for. . . . but they would be deck all use to me! So I guess sometimes a good dog is only a good dog if seen by a man who values that particular skill set. One thing I do really believe is that a lot of folk mistake 'good' dogs for 'exceptional' dogs. And there is a difference. . . . . and it's only by seeing one that really is exceptional that you can get a perspective on how good the others are. I've heard lads say a dog is amazing, for what I would think is the standard level of ability for a decent dog. If that makes sense? 3 Quote Link to post
huntmad. 67
Personly I don't think any dog will meet the standards of another man , simple fact [BANNED TEXT] judging another mans dog ur standards are alot higher even higher than your own expectations of your own dog , yes we all strive for the best bred pup out of the best dogs but it only takes that one person to not like the way it worked an its down hill from there for that dog ( it's no good wont make the grade ) but to the owner an many others it could be a quality dog , take me for example I hate the way a dog runs out of the beam like a collie x is known for but I'd never slate another mans dog for it, its just what i dont like but people are to happy to do it , like I said how can u grade a dog [BANNED TEXT] everyone has a different level of satisfaction I think it's pissing into the wind tbh Quote Link to post
South hams hunter 8,921
Thing is, we's all different... Some folks are happy with their lot, Others constantly strive for more, And some make mountains out of molehills, Who fecking cares... Crack on.... Won't let me like it paul 1 Quote Link to post
South hams hunter 8,921
What meets one man's is never going to meet anothers. A group of people will have a standard they have amongst themselves based on what they work and how often They work it. Whether the antis like it or not people continue to work illegal quarry so a man that does 100 foxes a season but does waste a run on a rabbit isn't going to want a pup from say one of the dogs you see that catches 100 bunnies a week as it just might not have the minerals to even take a fox. People should breed from dogs that do what they want as often as they need it and people after pups should just hope that if they can't see the parents work that the owners are truthful about what the parents do 1 Quote Link to post
