paulk73 151
took my plummer ratting this morning for the first time in a while. I arrived first and decided to have a little look round before my mate turned up, and see if we could get any positive marks from the dog. straight away he started marking a big pile of sleepers, but there was to many to move on my own. so we went for a little mooch. I looked around a few likely spots bit got no joy, then we came to an abandoned 4x4 parked in the field. the dog showed a lot of interest in it. my mate turned up and with his little bitch plummer. so we decided to open the bonnet and have a look. after a prod about, the rat dropped to the ground and the little bitch snatched it up. we then came to a big bank that was full of fresh holes. the dogs marked a few and we smoked a few but the warrens where that deep nothing moved. next we came to an old astra that had been parked up and left to rot. my dog marked the car. after lifting the bonnet, we saw 2 nests but no rat. then my mate said iys in the wing. so after a bit of poking about the rat dropped and ran to a pile of compacted rotting hay. my dog dug down and caught it. then we moved over to the sleepers. both dogs marked here. we started moving the sleepers and put the smoker in. almost straight away the rats started bolting from all sides. the dogs where getting confused. and rats where escaping. we repositioned the dogs and started picking the rats off as they came out. we didnt have a massive bag, maybe 15 or so, but the same farm had 60 took off last sunday and perhaps 25 shot on friday night, so a hole has definitely been made. and there is still a few escapees for future breeding stock. 1 Quote Link to post

keith j 1,089
i'm trying to make room in my kennels for a ratting terrier, i've heard a lot of good things about the plummer terriers, at what age did you enter your to a rat Plummer terriers make fantastic ratters bud,ive used them for over ten years now and took some big numbers with them.there athleticism and agility is something else.I personally would not let a pup tackle an adult rat until it is equipped with the tools to do the job [adult teeth].plenty to do with your pup until then stock breaking ect,and even watching the adult dogs on.As adult rats can and do inflict a canny old bite when they latch on.Good luck keith j. paulk73 151
8 months I entered my plummer to rat. like keith says wait til the adult teeth are through. I took him with me before he entered to check my cage traps, but never let him enter. he was marking well before this age. my cage traps are completely covered over to shield from prying eyes but he always told me when we had one in the trap. then one day I let him off his lead to go check the traps. he marked the traps that had caught and I despatched the rats. after rebaiting and setting the traps, I decided to do one last lap of the permission. after seeing all the rats in traps for a few months and hearing them scteaming at him. he was well keyed up for one. we came round a bend and there was a huge rat sat out feeding. he chased it and caught it before it got under a shed.
