ferret20 1
well lads i just want to know out of curiosity which is the easiest type of hunting to start off with is digging with terriers or lurcher lamping easier any opinions would be great. Quote Link to post
Themoocher 231
It's not whats easier it's what you enjoy. If you enjoy a lot walkin in dark and walking a lot and enjoy dogs running then lurchers. If you want walk and find earths and enjoy shoveling then terriers. Quote Link to post
R.A.W 1,987
Depends where your passion is .......................... if you love what you do then it's easy.( or should I say enjoyable)? Both have a place in my heart, to me the athletic dance of a good lurcher is a wonder to watch but so is the pure grit and determination of a good terrier. Quote Link to post

ferret20 1
thanks for the replys but would there be more training and feeding in a lurcher than a patterdale or would it be the same training also which would be more cheaper in the long run or which would be the handiest for a new starter Edited March 23, 2014 by ferret20 Quote Link to post
johnny 2 367
If the cost of feeding is a issue mybe dogs aint for you. 1 Quote Link to post
Brigzy 1,298
Strange question. Would you prefer a 4x4 or a sports car ? Would you prefer greyhound racing or fell hound racing ? Running dogs and terriers are two completely different things. Quote Link to post
lurcherman887 178
Depends what you want and lurcher will oviously need more grub than terrier size mutt Quote Link to post

You will only get out of your dog what you put in be it a pug or Pit bull 1 Quote Link to post

The reason I think a lurcher is a better option is because you have the ability to do more ................ from a nights lamping to a valuable dog that marks rabbits for you while out ferreting and guards the nets on the opposite side of the fence. but.................... I'd most definitely say that it'll take more to train that lurcher compared to out and out digging dog. And a little busher is a different story again 1 Quote Link to post
ferret20 1
thanks R.A.W ill get the lurcher first then Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
What a strange topic and set of questions. As said if money or feeding is worrying you then maybe you should rethink either. How do you know you want to eventually have both? It's like saying should I take up tennis or deep sea diving. Only you know what you want to do. I am addicted to lurchers, seeing a dog behind it's quarry means more to me than anything that money could ever buy. And for that reason I will ALWAYS own a running dog and a lamp. But seeing the dog run behind it's quarry is only one aspect. There is daytime mooching in thick woodland which I do a lot of and really enjoy. You don't get to see much of the running. But you do see the dogs using their noses, marking, working as a pack etc. Before I had lurchers I had pet bull breeds. Staffys and English bulls. I always fancied the idea of working dogs but never knew what would suit me. Digging, ratting, running dogs etc. So I went out with a few different lads (off here as it happens, I was on here because I have always had an air rifle). I enjoy all aspects of working dogs, none of them disinterest me. But I will NEVER forget the lad who took me out with lurchers for the first time, early morning walk (before the ban) and old Charlie got up in the field. I didn't know what was going to happen but my heart was pounding, the dogs were coursing this fit winter dog fox in a huge field and I felt like I was high on drugs, it was the adrenalin. I knew from that moment that this was going to consume the rest of my life. So I would say get out and see what takes your fancy. You will know if it's what you want to do. It isn't a hobby for the weekends, it is a way of life. All the best. 2 Quote Link to post
