rob284 1,682
If you was to train a dog to get a fox it wouldnt be instinct. Start the dog when you think its ready. Quote Link to post
neil cooney 10,416
I would disagree Rob. A well bred terrier should instinctively hunt fox the same as they should go to ground instinctively. It should be as natural as a duck to water. 1 Quote Link to post
gonetoearth 5,144
Keep it in a kennel feed it water it then at round about 6 months put it in a terrier box let it see the other getting pulled out the terrier box Few times then after a few weeks Put a collar on the pup show it a hole. It should fly in being a well bred clone. Bobs your uncle Quote Link to post

neil cooney 10,416
Sorry Rob, I misinterpreted your post. The anti's (I know your not one) are always saying that terriers are trained to go in and attack and other such rubbish. But in truth, a terrier does what a terriers does naturally. What a novice entering a terrier needs to know is when the time is right and when enough is enough. 4 Quote Link to post

BlackDog1 134
If the dogs bred right then that's a start, you then have to have a steady and patient head on your shoulders. take the dog out whilst digging and tie it up away from the earth, do this from around 7/8 months. this will let the dog get the scents and hear what's going on under the ground. when the dog gets to around 12/13 (maybe younger or maybe older depending on the dogs maturity, I personally wait until at least 13 months) months let it run empty earths. When the dog is around 15/16 months let it enter an occupied shallow earth (with a locator collar on) and then its down to the dog as you have done everything you can to help it. When doing all this make sure you are within the law and preferably with someone who knows what they are doing and has the experience. Quote Link to post

BlackDog1 134
Just to get used to the 'darkness' so to speak, let it get a feel for what its going to be doing. doing this will give the pup a bit of experience and confidence, also there will be old scent in empty earths so it will get used to this. Irishhunter14 89
Running a young dog through a couple of empties learns him to travel and also learns him that not every hole has stuff in it very important thing. Wouldn't let them travel to many or they get sticky 1 Quote Link to post
rob284 1,682
It also trains em to run empties which is no good 1 Quote Link to post
Irishhunter14 89
A terrier will learn not to run empties and only run occupied or working holes when getting plenty of hunting at the right age 2 Quote Link to post
