Dengil 27
Hi Forest if the dogs were on a lead and you didn't encourage the dogs to attack the cat you've no real issues. If she does report you and the dogs were of the off the lead there could be an argument that the dogs were out of control but it would be very hard to prove and would go nowhere. As bad as it sounds it'll prob go in your favour that the cat owner witnessed it cause she herself saw that it was accidental, you didn't encourage it, you were remorseful etc etc so her only argument could be that your dog killed her cat, its normal animal behaviour, I'd continue to make peace with her mate, my dog nailed one few months ago not pleasant mate but sxxx happens. Ideation 8,216
At the end of the day it's normal to feel bad. Just like i'd hope someone would feel bad if they ran over one of our lurchers. . . . . even if they didn't like dogs. If you were out of the way and the cat was off her property, there is not much that can be done. However, if your dogs jumped into her garden or something . . . . . you will have more trouble. I'd never walk my dogs off a lead in a built up area. One wrong move. . . . and they are f****d. Cat could have run out into the road in front of a car etc etc etc. Also you never know what's around the corner. . . . imagine if you came upon some little kid with their cat, and the kid had to see the cat smashed up. Glad I live out in the sticks . . . . any cat here is in the wrong place. 2 Quote Link to post

dytkos 17,784
Almost had a similar thing myself yesterday Got the dogs out the motor at a parking space at the end of a bridleway and as I was getting ready to walk off the two bitches, one terrier, one lurcher, set off in front and as they went round the first corner there was a hell of of a skritching. I ran to them just in time to see the cat dragging itself up to about 10 foot up a tree, thank feck. Cheers, D. 1 Quote Link to post

Tiercel 6,986
I will never understand why more people do not break their dogs to cats. A dog that chases cats is just as much a liability as a stock chaser. TC 3 Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
There's plenty of dogs that are fine with 'their own' cats at home, but deadly on strange cats, and it also depends on whether or not the dog is hunting. Here's one of mine looking daggers at a farm cat that was nicking the kidneys out of the rabbits. She wanted to go for it, but I was warning her as I took the photo. Also depends on whether the dog is in hunting mode or not. If she'd put it out of a hedge I wouldn't have had the same control over the dog at all. I've only ever had one dog who really loved cats, in a friendly way. We were out working a plantation once and she was working alongside the terriers, when suddenly she came flying through the trees back to me looking horrified, and I knew at once that they had found a feral cat. She was my best fox dog at the time, but just loved all cats and couldn't harm them: strange bitch indeed. Never had another quite like her, and she used to always sleep curled up with our cat at home. Quote Link to post

Country Joe 1,411
I had a Whippet x Bedlington who lived with our Cat, cant say they loved each other, but she never bothered it, she was different with Ferals, she would take them out, but in a public place, or built up area, she would be on the lead. always amazes me on here time and time again lads with lurchers off the leash on built up areas, and its never their fault, the cat just appeared. Im no cat lover, but they are someones pet. 4 Quote Link to post
