The Taking Of Deer (Pre Ban)

Okay so I've been reading a few topics, now to the lads who used to do them before the ban came in I would like to know this, what do you look for when choosing a deer to course, do you have them on a slip and get them beaten out of a woodland, let the dog free run and put them up himself, I mean there fast animals, so seeing one in the middle of a large open field you wouldn't be able to get close enough for a slip so the dog could get it before it hit cover ? Or do you? Whenever Ive seen a deer it's spotted me before I see it. No daft or sarcastic replys please lads I'm generally curious, think it's got to be the ultimate catch for a dog surely. The dog would have to have speed stamina power and a bit of intelligence.

As a youngerst I use to hunt a foresty with the lurchers let them work though it and rise and catch themselfs but also heard of groups of lads do it as sort of a beating line flushing through with bushing dogs to lurchers waiting in open fields

Did they catch ? I thought it would be near on impossible for a dog to match a deer for speed through woodland ?

The reds and roe what i used to run was in willow all i did was wait at the end whilst they got pushed out into the open then it was game one slip one or two dogs and watch a dam good run also ran them when out in the middle swweeny but they was hard to get on to did some long slips didn't manage that many that way but had some very good runs

Yeaaa seen them caught in forestery blocks but usually it when the deers made a mistake

Yep, like running a herd of sheep lol but get them in big fields and they will show you how they can shift!

Speaking to my old man last night he said his mates 2 dogs used to do reds, but they were massive apparently around 30tts. Don't think id even like to attempt one of those to be honest. Think the risk to the dog is too great

Deer are a risk to dogs full stop....especially the regular taking of fallow. Dogs will be dragged threw wire fences ect I dont bother with them much these days as much as i use to do, they can really destroy a good dog, you could get lucky and take a good few with not much of a problem, but the day will come when your dog or dogs will come unstuck, not pleasant. Just my opinion and experience on the matter.
