Open Coal Fire Question

Well seasoned hardwood you want to burn, and stay away from anything that's been painted or treated in any way. Softwood like pine needs to be seasoned for years to burn safely.:thumbs:

If you don't already have a flue liner fitted it may help to do so.. the creosote from coal and wood eat's away at the cement inbetween the block's/brick's and the smell can seep through into the next room which i have seen happen.. the worst one i have seen was in Moll's old cottage..the fire was inbetween the bedroom and front room the bedroom also had a open fire...every now and again the smoke and smell would seep through into the bedroom chimney and fill the bedroom with smoke and a horrible smell..in the end the bedroom fire chimney had to be sealed of and if she had not moved a liner would of been fitted eventually..

i hate that sh*tty sticky coal lol try a local fuel supplier and ask for "ovoids" i get 200kg for £65, it burns alot longer and hotter, leaves less mess in the ash pan and you get it delivered to your door (they put mine in my bunker for me). :tongue2: I was told by a chimney sweep up the road that you shouldnt burn coal and logs together but Feck him. i love sitting there in me undies sweating like feck on a winters evening
