Waz 4,266
Sometimes I get the same, no apparent reason.. put it down to air pressure.
walshie 2,804
Quite a fan of a coal fire. Sounds like it could be your coal. Get some nice hot-burning coal like homefire and leave it burning for a couple of days. That should get rid of the smell.
Strong Stuff 2,171
Something seeping into the bricks maybe? I only had 2 winters of a real fire but reckon I had cracked it for best results by the second, I ended up using Excel smokeless, it burns loads better and definitely cleaner than coal, whenever I used an emergency bag of proper coal I was near choking in there off the smell, never noticed any smell of the Excel It's more expensive, but you use less. Bosun11 537
Though SS is right with differing coal, though in this case i'd betcha GTE's on the money with logs. I burn both on my open fire too but I make sure the wood I use is 'natural' and well seasoned.
