Something seeping into the bricks maybe?

I only had 2 winters of a real fire but reckon I had cracked it for best results by the second, I ended up using Excel smokeless, it burns loads better and definitely cleaner than coal, whenever I used an emergency bag of proper coal I was near choking in there off the smell, never noticed any smell of the Excel

It's more expensive, but you use less.

Logs make more resin in the smoke and leave residue on the chimney lining

"Antique" :laugh:

Yes the heat will burn it off. Perservere grasshopper. :thumbs:

the wobbly chairs that are beyond repair and i`ve got stuck with and a few table legs :D

Wouldn't have thought the varnish on the wood would help the overall smell.

Though SS is right with differing coal, though in this case i'd betcha GTE's on the money with logs. I burn both on my open fire too but I make sure the wood I use is 'natural' and well seasoned.
