What A Start To The Day

Recommended Posts

I don't think the General Licence is Law, more of a guidance IE you don't have to have one and you don't have to abide by it. I think I've read this on this site. But then again I could be wrong, I usually am.

ooof, good luck with that IF the boys in blue do turn up!

I guess its a case of how much risk do you want to take/ are you willing to live with.

As they say, you rolls the dice, you takes the chance....

Supose its different for me as my back garden backs on to one of my permissions so if I shoot from from my garden im still doing my permission dutys as pigeons are everywhere at min

not meaning to sound like a dick here lad .. just wondered

say a pigeon is sat in a field eating crops and you shoot it this is ok . YES

after it has finished its meal and flys straight into your tree to have a rest before going back for desert .. and you pop it in the noggin' is it still commiting its offence that we deem punishable by death? !! :hmm:

My take on it .. yes it is

suppose it would depend on the actual police officer that showed up on the day .. or the judge if it went to court.

Me personally I hate having to abide by stupid rules! in the grand scheme of things what does it matter about a few pigeons getting shot for food! as long as its a clean kill then imho it should be ok to hunt them.!

but suppose the law is the law afterall

Im a good boy I never break thew 'rules' ... honestly ...:whistling::laugh::laugh:

For you it's a clear case that you have an airgun but absolutely no knowledge of the rules and regulations that govern what we can shoot and under what circumstances. Not knowing is no defence when you end up in court.

Unfortunately i will disagree with you there as i do abide by the law and completed a pest control course, The general licence in Scotland does not differ greatly from that in England but I do know what I can and cannot shoot.

http://www.snh.gov.uk/protecting-scotlands-nature/species-licensing/bird-licensing/health-and-safety/ for my permissions and I believe this is the Scottish equivalent of what you are referring to.http://www.snh.gov.uk/docs/B878312.pdf.

I've read those documents before, they are basically the same as the English versions, shooting for the pot is NOT covered. I hope that when you took a recent shot at a woodpigeon in your garden and missed that the pellet did not leave your property? That too is an offence.

If you are such an expert on pest control I would suggest that you would have a better knowledge of the existing laws and not support shooting for the pot.

Tim

Well this seems to be heated debate aimed at individuals which could have been handled better through PM rather than a public forum

Lets put his to bed once and for all (for my part anyway) Considering where I live (which isn't a town) and I never claimed to be an expert with pest control.

Yes I shot at at a woodie in my garden and yes the damn thing was trying to eat the seeds and seedlings recently planted.

Using scarecrows don't work as they use them as a perch before going to the ground after a while and I have yet to know anyone who has had a woodie going into a Larson trap. (if anyone has had better luck please let me know on that one).

Poison is completely out the window as the neighbours including myself have cats that roam and the last thing i would want to do is poison a family pet or working animal and gas well that speaks for itself (anyone tried gassing pigeons as that would be an exercise in futility).

Netting well that works to a certain degree but the jackdaws see that as a challenge and will pull it to bits given half a chance (I have personally witnessed these birds put a hole into a chimney breast by pecking out mortar and dislodge a large stone.

Did the pellet leave the boundary? give me some credit!!!! I have a bank at the back cut in at 8 foot high (an excellent back stop by the way when zeroing the rifle) which continues to rise for another 100m plus so unless I'm shooting at the sky which I don't, the pellet will never leave my boundary.

Hell I even abide by the law for not cutting my own hedge during the breeding season as every year so I don't disturb the wild birds. I currently have a pair of black birds nesting in the Hedgerow and a pair of robins nesting behind the clematis as well as the song birds, blue tits and black tits that frequent my garden on a regular basis. I would not even consider for one second that these were targets and would condemn anyone that did. (see what a nob post).

As the post that I originally put seems to be taken out of context, I apologise as I should have stated that yes it was wrong to shoot without a bona-fide reason (protecting veg, wildlife, safety etc) however the hunter-gatherer in me was thinking it was shot and eaten as opposed to being shot for the hell of it.

I think this is the first time I've been on the airgun section and this is one of the first things I've read. I can honestly say I find it totally unbelievable at how much this lad is getting slated and how much depth it's going in to, because he, wait for it.... Shot a pigeon!!!! Especially when he could perfectly well have been on his own land and it could have been damaging his own crops or whatever it is that you need as a reason. Either way, I don't think he's going to have plod knocking on the door! Jesus, you'd think he'd shot someone's dog!
