Plummerterrier 291
I have bought a second hand 22-250 as my first rifle , it shoots great but the outside of the barrel has little light rust spots . Is there anything I can do for this? Quote Link to post
alan81 110
WD-40 should take the rust of but make sure to get all the WD-40 of after cleaning and then use gun oil. Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
I would not advise wd40 as it can take off blueing, what you need is some 00 grade wire wool, and some light machine oil, give the rust spot area a liberal coating, then rub them with the wire wool gently, add more oil if you feel it going a little dry, this method works great and can remove some quite stubborn rust spots. charlie caller 3,654
Any gun oil or 3inone type stuff will do, I like the spray cans of 3inone, cheap, handy and last for ages, you will pay another fiver for a tin of the same stuff that says gun oil on it. Quote Link to post

Deker 3,478
Only use the wire wool if you have to, start with a soft cloth and oil, you may well find that works, if not you may have to start getting more aggressive, as mentioned use a VERY Fine grade of wire wool or you will make the barrel worse! charlie caller 3,654
Just remember if you do use the wool, make sure you keep putting plenty of oil on the metalwork to lubricate it as you GENTLY rub the rust away. Quote Link to post
