Hare Shoot According To Baw

Recommended Posts

Well. . . . isn't this emotional.

Just thought i'd throw in my tuppence worth. . . . .

The shooting of hares on mass is always going to be an emotive subject. At the end of the day it's dressed up like a sporting day out, and i'm sure there are plenty that relish blasting over the big bunnys en masse. . . . . . but for most who have been around it, they realise that it's the over all organisation that is the challenge, rather than the actual killing. It's a cull. . . . no more, no less.

There is a big difference in many ways, between culling hundreds every year, keeping the population largely as it is. . . . and this is mostly achieved due to the fact that the estate is well keepered, and the hares are pretty much untouched the rest of the year. . . . they breed and multiply, and then they are reduced en masse. . . . . and then build up again.

It's part of the cycle of these big estates and has gone on for ever.

Having said that. . . . it's really not my thing, and i have never in my life pulled the trigger on a hare. Now I carry a gun most days, and I work my dogs most days as well. The gun is an efficient tool. . . . . the dog is a somewhat less efficient tool at times . . . . but a damn site more enjoyable and on occasion is actually the more efficient of the two options.

I suppose i've just never been able to grasp the 'pleasure' in shooting hares? I can understand the delight in dropping a really high, curling pheasant, or taking a wood cock as it jinks between the trees. But a driven hare??? Just don't see it.

I'd rather run them with the dog. . . . and if they needed removing on masse. . . . rifle and lamp every time. The job is done, and it's done efficiently and out of the public view.

Now one more interesting thing. . . . . i've met and inordinate amount of gun men who think coursing is highly cruel, and so is all running dog work. . . . . and think that sacking something with a shotgun after being driven across a field is less so?

Just shows how much ignorance is on both sides. . . .

I see just as many folk on both sides of the dog vs gun fence that I wouldn't piss on if on fire. . . . . . .

It's a sad fact that the hunting "community" still attack each other at every opportunity; the shooters v the coursers, the Hunts v the foxing lads, even the lampers v the daywalkers !! I, personally,

Nothin worse than a hare thread on this site. You soon see who has a proper understanding of the countryside and who doesn't though.

Aye, it's almost as bad as killing tame park deer and getting all lurcher owners a bad name.....

When I was growing up; my dad would have given me an absolute hiding if I'd shot a hare or jay when out rough shooting "It can't be a f*cking pest if you never see them!" Was what he used to say; his arguement is a valid one; just cos it's on a list doesn't mean it's ok everywhere; near me; I see more red kites than hares or jays. In fact; I can't remember the last time I saw a hare.

The brown hares biggest friend was coursing under rules. The hare. Coursing took place a couple of times a year. The hares envirment was cared for farmers set aside land and planted suitible crops , Hare numbers were healthy , the hare as pulus say was and is under exstream pressure from modern farming methords , Hare drives are proof of healthy hare populations. Very little has been recorded about the brown hares. There lives in the main remain a mystery. Long may it be that way but understanding there needs and. Enviroment will safe gaurd there future. Out of controll buzzard , badger, fox, stoat weasel , populations. Threaten all ground dwelling Game. Management not bans. , a well keeperd estate well farmed. With. Grass and hedge rows promote. All ground dwellas. , Pest controll !!!!!! Maybe we need to drop that title. WILDLIFE and GAME MANAGMENT

We don't have a single hare on the estate I keeper on. . . . . which is a real shame, as we have some good land for it, and the pest control is well managed. I'd love to get a small population here, and manage them. . . .

so what's the reason your land has none and what would be your solution, all that and any changes needed would possibly take a couple of years to even get the stage of putting a single hare on the ground, take mallards the BTO have them down as amber due to there decline in Scotland`s coasts yet there has been a 200% increase in England and a 219% increase on inland waterways, something has triggered a change in there habits, unless the reasons why are understood then flooding Scotland`s coasts with mallard`s would be doomed to failure.

  1. perthshire keper.you and a lot of your kind are greedy selfish sob .i have known lots of keepers like you tight wads who want all of the estates hares and rabits for themselves thier arses squeak when they walk .if i had the money for a scottish estate the first thing to go would be people like you .like the early white man in america you think that your lands will be full of game for ever .you canott see any further than your bowl of cold porridge .you just keep on doffing your cap to your illuminatti masters .when your old and finished sitting in your wee bed then maybe just maybe the penny will drop .i hate shotguns and i absoulutely detest people like you who think they are conserveing the countryside while in some cases poisoining the birds of prey so that thier masters can have a couple of more braces of birds.you are just a glorefied chicken farmer .hares are for the course not for some fat useless overweight city trader who has to have the harers pushed towards the end of his shotgun barells.perthshire keeper ? .keeper of whaht every penny you can screw out of nature to put in your wee litttle piggy bank

tell me dear boy? have you ever bought a real christmas tree? has any one on this thread ever bought a real christmass tree?

They were kept singly, in wicker racer crates, with hay in bottom. Iv searched google but can't find a pic, I'm sure iv seen some on YouTube a while ago but can't find clip now. Do they all live in purpose made crates? Or do you still get a few deaths ????
