Does Size Matter?

Recommended Posts

However, in the day to day work of lambing, ferreting and bushing etc, he is just about right . . . . . and I really think if he was shorter. . . . he wouldn't do half as well where and how I hunt.

I wouldn't be without the daft bugger.

I think your right there about the size, a dog under 22" just wouldn't catch much round here, my old dog at 22" caught more than smaller dogs I've owned/seen but he could have done with being a bit taller too imo. What type of ground are people having succes with their small dogs on?

Heart boy. It's all about the heart best dog was twenty inches a little jet could turn on a 50 cent coin

Once went on a organised coursing day at March in Cambridge . Ten men and twenty dogs and I was running a 20" whippet bred bitch, Cloe' As I walked onto the land a well known coursing man who was putt

From the few I have seen myself they lack height for many tasks such as lamping, going unsighted is the main problem. However I am no fan of huge whippets and believe they should be around 20-21 tts.

Ive a we bitch at 19tts and its strengh is not real she weights just over 50lbs

Fat bitch lol what is she a Labrador lol get a pic up of her I got a wheaten x here and she 23 an only just over 50lb when fit and she quite a heavy set bitch tbh

As we're talking about whippets and not whippets vs lurchers . . . . . some of the comments are a bit off topic.

So back to the whippet thing . . . . I hate to be different from everyone. . . . . but in all honestly, I don't think i'd kennel a whippet under 20" . . . . in fact i'd be reluctant to kennel one under 21.5 ".

My current whippet is 22" tts and weighs around 18 Kilo, or just under 40lb.

He pretty much handles everything I ask of him, and has done some things I would never have thought possible.

He does also like to get himself in situations where he is out matched. . . . . he still gives his all, and keeps trying till the end, but just doesn't have the size or weight to anchor what he is trying to stop. Having said that . . . . I don't think many whippets would be up to that particular task.

he does the job you want ,and ok jai by the sound of it. What do you think grews w/g's they prob only be bit bigger and prob near as fast as your dog , but maybe bit tougher being a hybrid , you ever fancied 1 jai ?

Aye he's not bad for a whippet. With him i've taken r/h/f/d (obviously within the relevant laws) as well as rats, mink, squirrels, pheasant, partridge etc. Not a world beater maybe, but I think he punches above his weight (or height), and for me his best feature . . . . . is he can hunt like f**k! And he's one hell of a driven little dog.

I do like grews ray . . . . but to be honest I just fancied a good strong whippet . . . . once you start to x breed. . . . well, i'd just want a lurcher. Hence I have the whippet, and then I have the lurcher, grey/whip/sal/bull/collie. . . . . totally different dogs.

FOD - I would really like to get his blood on the ground, he will be five at the end of next season, so if he makes it through (fingers crossed) I may well be looking for the right bitch . . . . but it's tough owning the dog, rather than the bitch. Also do I look to put his blood into a line of lurchers or into a line of whippets???

I've considered putting him to -

Straight Whippet

Half x beddy/Grey

Half x Collie/grey

I'm drawn toward the last.

Theres room for all sizes in my kennels, il always keep at least one terrier ive got my 20" whippet with a dash of beddy every lad I know has underestimated her at first glance but shes a really handy mooching companion and has enough in the tank to keep going all day. Dont get me wrong shes not the best on the lamp but im waiting for a pup thats due in a few week that should make 24" ish hopefully for that job. Horses for courses

Small dogs are so under estimated only lamp one of mine and it manages a nights lamping fine

I can see why ppl go for bigger dogs though, my mate has a beddy whippet 19tts I have a collie whippet grey 23tts and his is forever not spotting stuff on the lamp where as mine don't miss a thing. Think those extra few inches make a hell of a difference

I think the original post was about whippets, questioning the difference between an 18" whip and a 21/22 " whip.

Saying . . . . well some people like 24/25/26/27/38 " lurchers and an 18" whippet just cant compare to them. . . . .

. . . . . is stating the fecking obvious!!!!

Seen whippets bred to kc standard height course under rules, only 17" bitches and great to watch.

Wouldn't want to own one that small, I did have one but she was wonderful to look at but wouldn't chase. Another guy on here had her litter sister and she was the same beautiful but totally useless.

Tbf tho if your dog is a handy lamping dog weather it sees it's rabbit or not it still should run the length of the beam and spot it on it's way down imo.

Iv been stood on the brow of a hail lamper a rabbit knowing fine well that the dog hasn't seen it so I slipped him and once he got over the brow running straight down the beam and spots the rabbit one turn and retrived.
