gnipper 6,475
Lads with 20" and under dogs that were successful on the bunnies out of interest what type of ground were you running and was it ferreting or lamping? Quote Link to post
Sweeney 316
My old mans mate had a dog, he said it was about 18" tiny little dog and used to catch hares ! Reckons it used to make his and his mates dogs 23" plus look daft !! My mates got a 1/4 beddy 3/4 whippet now...fast ! You wouldn't believe, but it yaps and hunts up everytime! You think his mrs will let him get rid !?? Quote Link to post

miles 227
Once went on a organised coursing day at March in Cambridge . Ten men and twenty dogs and I was running a 20" whippet bred bitch, Cloe' As I walked onto the land a well known coursing man who was putting the day on says " hey kid! We're not rabbiting today!" lol lol lol I had the last laugh, 4/5 her fourth was in desperate trouble before going to ground and that was by no means a one off. Covered the ground just fine ;-) 4 Quote Link to post
trigger2 3,145
birds pretty much summed it up i reckon. anything the dog does other than rabbits just class as a bonus. one of the best runs i ever seen was a 17 and 19 inch whippet on a good strong winter hare. the run seemed to go on for ever. it was at the point the hare deserved to live but on the other hand those two little whippets had more than earnt the right to catch it. in the end the hare lost but what a fecking run. Sirius 1,391
From the few I have seen myself they lack height for many tasks such as lamping, going unsighted is the main problem. However I am no fan of huge whippets and believe they should be around 20-21 tts. Otherwise they become bastardised greyhounds and quite frankly you might as well get a Lurcher if you need a big whippet. It's sad but many so called working whippets are getting bigger. It's like the show folk exaggerating something so it wins more but in this case it's working folk exaggerating something so it catches more lol oh the irony lol Edited March 16, 2014 by Sirius 3 Quote Link to post
wuyang 513
Why ever someone wants a large whippet I'll never know. The only advantage of greater height is when the dog looks down the beam. What you gain in one hand you lose in the other. Edited March 16, 2014 by wuyang Quote Link to post
delboy_187 902
Both mate . Used my bitch on everythin .cover, lamping, with ferrets any ground if dog is good it don't matter . . She used to blow my friends 26" bull greyxgrey off the map . Much more agile if it's only bunnies you after Quote Link to post

mushroom 12,954
TBH I can't see a 20" dog doing what I need, but as for rabbits and the odd hare should be fine Frankly a 20" dog is gonna struggle to pull a large deer (unless there's Beddy blood in there, naturally ) Quote Link to post
fifeman 164
A 22inch dog is all you ever need. Quote Link to post
