tomas87 18
I'm not into showing its just to keep him cool in the warmer weather had a quote to have it done at a groomers but its nearly £50 Quote Link to post
Dawn B 212
Hand stripping is not to keep him cooler or warmer, its completely dependant on when it needs to be done. A stripped coat in the summer offers no more protection than a heavy one and the dog is no more comfortable because of it. As the top coat grows it will become full and thick. Speaking from a Border's owners point of view, I would leave it till it "blows" or starts to part down the centre of his back. Then use finger and thumb to pull it all out. You can use chalk to get a better grip on the coat. You can also use a BLUNT stripping knife, but it must be blunt otherwise the coat will break. Take everything past his eyebrows off. Do NOT use a furminator, they rip out undercoat. 2 Quote Link to post
jeemes 4,453
Get an electric shaving kit. I just bought one thats pretty good. I do one with a ferminator and another who has a nuisance linty coat with the shavers. They definately feel better after it. I wish Borders had smooth coats.Living in the midlands it never really gets that cold. Some of the coats on the working dogs are not good i think but thats because they are bred for working traits not coat. You may start by plucking lumps of fur out but you soon get bored unless you are a showing type. Pushing through bramble helps get some out and is more fun.good luck Quote Link to post
