foresterj 1,096
We all seem to demand much higher standards from our dogs than we do from ourselves. The pursuit of the faultless dog also tends to diminish with age by and large in my experience, that been said I'm unconvinced this isn't a wholly appropriate post on an open forum where we never know who is reading.just an opinion. 4 Quote Link to post
beast 1,884
dogs which simply cant or wont work in any way are few and far between. i expect my dogs to learn a lot of different skills (ferretting, hunting up, bit of lamping, gun work, trailing shot deer etc) and whilst i have had some excellent dogs, mostly average, and some really quite poor, i have never had one which was crap at everything. ive known dogs bought for hares which werent up to it which became very good lampers, ive known lurchers which became very good gun dogs, etc for me, i will never pass a dog on, and i have always been able to find something which a dog can do to a decent standard. i think too that a lot of people simply lack the patience to persevere with a dog, build a bond, train, enter when ready and in appropriate circumstances, and if something goes wrong then go back a step or two, work on the dogs confidence and tryagain when the dog is ready. there would certainly be less failures if certain people wouldnt give up so easily 14 Quote Link to post
Dranny GLC 112
Its the shit dogs that are up for sale and get passed about if I bourght a pup put all the time into to it and did everything I could to get out what I want and it still wasnt good enough I wouldn't sell it on saying it a top working lurcher job forces sale bla bla if it isn't good enough And there wasn't a friend or family member that wants a pet that isn't house trained. I would have it pts better than getting passed from kennel to kennel. 1 Quote Link to post

trigger2 3,137
dogs are like humans some are clever some are stupid .if you used a dog on deer preban some of them would not chase rabitts not because they were jackers but because they wanted easier to catch bigger stuff .some wont chase foxes not because they are jackers they logicaly think why get bit and injured by a inedible object ? .some will chase a hare turn it a couple of times and stop .not because they were jackers . then the next hare they would run ragged .the dog by exspireince knows which hare is more likely to be caught .if a wolf was out hunting would he wastse his time and energy chaseing a jack rabitt or would he rather chase a deer .some dogs especially lurcher to lurcher are not kept fit by some owners and jack because they are unfit and knackerd or they are badly bred with no stamina .if you have a dog jack on you .when previously it did not i would check the dog for injuries as that is sometimes the cause or over working the dog .some owners run thier dogs ragged and wonder why they jack is a deer easier to catch than a rabbit then? i dont think a preban deer dog would refuse to run a rabbit because a deer was easier to catch. 3 Quote Link to post
Bazil brush 474
You got to ask yourself why did the dog jack, see alot of Dickheads over matching pups etc, fuking them up and blaming the dog not themselves. A lot keep dogs but not many are cut out to be dog men!!! 2 Quote Link to post
gsdxg 10
i have run mainly gsdxg for the last 44 years and in all that time i have learned that gsdxg like pure german shepherds have the ability to think for themselves they are not the average point and let go lurcher.in the lamp they will not exspend energy .unlike most lurchers if they see a rabitt and it is close to the hedge they will realise that to run at it is being stupid they will approach the rabitt at a steady pace .if the rabitt is on the edge of the hedge they realise 9 times out of ten it will escape into cover .if with a point and go dog they will lurk along the hedge line waiting for the game to run in .they catch a lot of rabitts on the squat in the lamp as they are very clever and do not rush in like point and go dogs.if used on deer preban they will for the most part go strangely blind in the lamp when rabitts are about .i have seen them course hares preban and stop chaseing yet the next one they have run ragged .deer preban were far easier for gsd xg to catch they were as good as dead in a open field big 27 inch 85lbs dogs prefer to run big stuff .unless you have actually owned this type of lurcher and have worked it hard you would not realise how clever these lurchers are .they are not for anyone who exspects thier dog to chase anything and everything because being very clever they have unlike the average point and go lurcher the ability to think for themselves.at times they can be very annoying at other times thier ability to think for themselves can be amazeing.especially when pursuing stuff in woodland cover that the average point and go lurcher is not capable of doing 2 Quote Link to post

Phil Lloyd 10,738
Never realy had a dog that refused to run the quarry he had been schooled for, but I have seen a few dogs 'pick and choose' their prey. Obviously for a lad that is twice as keen as his dog,.this attitude causes them to rubbish their jukel.. I've owned dogs that started off on rabbits (lamping) and which progressed to catching the Roe,...definitely show a marked preference for continuing to course the deer.. I'll not say they refused to chase a rabbit in the lamp, but after a few dances in the dark, with a larger and more interesting quarry, they definitely were not the rabbit dogs, that they once were....Did not bother me back then,..and it would not bother me now... . 5 Quote Link to post

block end 242
Most dogs given the right handling and enough game put infront of them will do the job ! Alot has got to do with entering at the right time and understanding when the dog is ready for certain quarry Not all dogs will go fact should you still keep a dog your not 100: happy with I know I won't just goes back to the old phrase standards if it no good pts not giving it the big I am who's to say that person will look after the dog like I did for peace of mind I'd put it down if not good enough for me not good enough for the next man jmo Quote Link to post
DEERMAN 1,020
You cant put in what the lord hasn't ,all you can do is get the best out of what you have and if that aren't to your standard, PTS and don't let the dog go on the pass from owner to owner roundabout ., Edited March 15, 2014 by DEERMAN 1 Quote Link to post
clipo 871
Always makes me laugh when its talk of "makeing the grade" when sometimes that grade is live in shitty kennel with no bedding, impress the kids "on da street" and make the owner look like a god with dogs!!! Im sure we have all seen the type of kunt who buys endless amounts of adult dogs as he cant be arsed (or be trusted) to rear a pup from scratch and train it to his own high standard of dog work...... However a man with a dog that just dont wanna do it after all the best rearing, training and had plenty of work put infront of it has to make a choice that only he should worry about Edited March 15, 2014 by clipo Quote Link to post

gsdxg 10
trigger 2 .phil Lloyd is correct in saying dogs preban who caught deer do show lack of intrest in smaller prey .my best dog preban caught 9 cwd one night he never ever refused to chase muntjack fallow or chinese water deer field or woodland but many a time he would not chase rabitts .a 27 inch 85lb dog finds it hard work to pick up a rabitt .it is far easier for it to catch a deer preban .big dogs can catch rabitts but due to thier size .it is not as easy to do.any dog over 24 inches is a bit big for rabitts.a good top end fast big dog would have very little trouble catching cwd preban as they are not that fast and do not take as much effort as a lamp wise rabitt .also big dogs like gsdxg are not very fast away .tho some are very fast top end .if a wolf was out on the hunt would he chase a rabitt or a hare ? or would he chase a deer .the hare would twist and turn and take a lot of energy and effort with very little return .deer are bigger and offer a greater return on the wolfs effort. if the wolf was starving he would chase the rabitt or hare as any food is better than none . given the choice deer would be his preferred target .i did have one gsdxg preban that would chase anything rabitt fox hare deer but he was the only one that would .the rest would pick up a rabitt on the squat in the lamp but if it ran they would just stop .dogs are after all only domesticated wild animals.gsdxg under 2 yrsof age will chase any thing but once they have tasted deer preban then it is a different story most quickly lose intrest in rabitts.just as a mature wolf would 1 Quote Link to post
